Anthony’s Opening Diatribe- Gannon Leaving is Good News
In his Opening Diatribe this Morning, Anthony Discussed Why Jonathan Gannon Leaving is Good News…
It started yesterday with the hire of Jonathan Gannon. That was good news. A little bit of change at DC might not be a bad thing. I know there are a lot of people in the media saying “Oh my god, can the Eagles survive without Jonathan Gannon? It could be the end of the world. He was such a great coach.”
The shame of it is he didn’t take the job earlier. Because maybe you would have had Vic Fangio. Because I know he really wanted to come to the Eagles. Now you are a bit scrambling, there are not a ton of candidates out there.
Look, I don’t think Gannon was a bad coach. He frustrated me with his defensive beliefs and how he called the game. When you are a young coach, and you are going up a Andy Reid, you will take your lumps sometimes. They scored two TDs on that same motion play, and that was already on tape from Jacksonville. Where it looks like he will take that route across the field, and he doesn’t. It is tough to stop a team 2nd and goal from the 3. But it is fair to point out that criticism that you failed in that spot for walk-in TDs. You didn’t adjust in the second half.
But nobody can convince me that he called a good game in the second half… I thought Andy Reid took his lunch, despite having the ball 12 fewer minutes. Gannon is one of the reasons they lost the game. As great of a year as the Eagles’ defense had, they did feast a lot against bad QBs… Over the two years, he was Defensive Coordinator, they got riddled more than once.
I don’t think it’s a death knell that the Eagles lost Jonathan Gannon… You lost both Coordinators. Brian Johnson is the OC, we know that. I love Brian Johnson, he is a really sharp dude. He knows Jalen really well. That is going to be seamless. And you have got Nick, it is a Sirianni production. The greatest compliment you can give a head coach is that after two years they are poaching his assistants. That is pretty impressive. He already has a tree that is bearing fruit.
