Anthony’s Opening Diatribe- Gannon Leaving is Good News
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - NOVEMBER 07: Defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon of the Philadelphia Eagles walks off the field after a loss against the Los Angeles Chargers at Lincoln Financial Field on November 07, 2021 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In his Opening Diatribe this Morning, Anthony Discussed Why Jonathan Gannon Leaving is Good News…
It started yesterday with the hire of Jonathan Gannon. That was good news. A little bit of change at DC might not be a bad thing. I know there are a lot of people in the media saying “Oh my god, can the Eagles survive without Jonathan Gannon? It could be the end of the world. He was such a great coach.”
The shame of it is he didn’t take the job earlier. Because maybe you would have had Vic Fangio. Because I know he really wanted to come to the Eagles. Now you are a bit scrambling, there are not a ton of candidates out there.
Look, I don’t think Gannon was a bad coach. He frustrated me with his defensive beliefs and how he called the game. When you are a young coach, and you are going up a Andy Reid, you will take your lumps sometimes. They scored two TDs on that same motion play, and that was already on tape from Jacksonville. Where it looks like he will take that route across the field, and he doesn’t. It is tough to stop a team 2nd and goal from the 3. But it is fair to point out that criticism that you failed in that spot for walk-in TDs. You didn’t adjust in the second half.
But nobody can convince me that he called a good game in the second half… I thought Andy Reid took his lunch, despite having the ball 12 fewer minutes. Gannon is one of the reasons they lost the game. As great of a year as the Eagles’ defense had, they did feast a lot against bad QBs… Over the two years, he was Defensive Coordinator, they got riddled more than once.
I don’t think it’s a death knell that the Eagles lost Jonathan Gannon… You lost both Coordinators. Brian Johnson is the OC, we know that. I love Brian Johnson, he is a really sharp dude. He knows Jalen really well. That is going to be seamless. And you have got Nick, it is a Sirianni production. The greatest compliment you can give a head coach is that after two years they are poaching his assistants. That is pretty impressive. He already has a tree that is bearing fruit.

The Eagles Off-Season Needs on Offense
Welp, a great season ended in tragedy. This Eagles team looked elite all season. They were top 5 on both sides of the ball. And they were still in the game until the final moments. They came that close just to fall 3 points short. And now, we turn our eyes to the Off-Season. Bouncing back from losing in the Super Bowl can be tough. But not impossible. The Patriots came right back from losing to the Eagles to win it the next year. The Bengals lost to the Rams, and then made it to the AFC Championship game the next season. But making that return starts with having a great off-season. Let’s look at what the Eagles need to do, starting on the offense.
The Eagles are in a unique position of having nearly their entire offensive core locked up. Jalen Hurts, Devonta Smith, AJ Brown, Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Lane Johnson, and Dallas Goedert are all returning for at least the next two years. The people who may be leaving are Isaac Seumalo, Miles Sanders, and Jason Kelce. Seumalo and Sanders are free agents who may be too pricey to hold onto. And Jason Kelce is of course mulling his retirement. Beyond those 3 though, they are in a great position to run back the offense that was 2nd in scoring and went toe to toe with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
So what do the Eagles need to do to maintain having the elite offense they had this year? Let’s look at each position, and if they will need to improve it or address it in the offseason. What positions could the Eagles address in Free Agency or the Draft? Are there players at those positions that would make sense for them? Here are the Eagles’ off-season needs on the offensive side of the ball.
