Jahan Dotson Gives Eagles The WR3 They Were Looking For
WR3 was looking like a major issue for the Eagles. No one on the training camp roster was running away with that job. But they just found the answer in someone who was not on the roster, Jahan Dotson. The Eagles have acquired the Penn State alum from the Commanders.
The Eagles got Jahan Dotson and a 5th-round pick for a 3rd-round Pick, and two 7ths. It is the latest late training camp move for Howie Roseman after he acquired CJ Gardner Johnson at around this same time in 2022, and Ronald Darby at this time heading into the 2017 season.
He will likely operate out of the slot. But Moore likes to move his guys around. He experimented with both AJ Brown and Devonta Smith in the slot. So we might see some mixing and matching depending on the formation, and the matchups they can try to get.
The Commanders took Dotson with the 16th overall pick out of Penn State in 2022. In the two seasons since Dotson racked up 1,041 yards and 11 TDs despite playing with terrible QBs and not being the 1st option.
Jahan Dotson Addresses The Eagles’ Biggest Need
It was clear from camp the Eagles needed help at WR. They had no one they could trust behind Brown and Smith. Not only did they lack that extra dimension out of the slot, but it put them in a position where they would be in trouble if either of their top two guys missed time.
Jahan Dotson fixes that. He is not a superstar, but in two seasons we have seen he is an NFL WR. If you get 500 yards and 5 TDs from that 3rd guy, we would all be thrilled. With a real QB, and in a better offense, he could even exceed that. Though his target share might drop given how many options the Eagles have.
The price is slightly steep, but far from an overpay. You get a guy that was a 1st overall pick, for a 3rd round pick. You also get him for at least two more years, with a club option for a 3rd. That goes along with each of their main guys being locked up long-term, the QB being locked up long-term, and the RB being locked up for 3 years. Oh and also their LT, LG, and Center.
This offense is pretty much set for the foreseeable future. The only thing in flux is how long Lane Johnson will keep playing. Offense will not be an issue going forward. WR3 was the one remaining hole, and they just filled it with one of the best options in the market.
