Phillies Acquire Austin Hays From Orioles For Dominguez and Pache
The trade deadline is in full swing. We already saw other teams push their chips in, and now the Phillies have made their 1st move. They are acquiring right-handed Outfielder Austin Hays from the Orioles in return for Cristian Pache and Seranthony Dominguez.
What To Know About Austin Hays
Austin Hays is not the superstar bat some fans wanted. He is not Randy Arozarena or Luis Robert Jr. So if you were looking for that impact bat, you may be slightly disappointed. What he is though is the perfect platoon partner for Brandon Marsh. Marsh can’t hit lefties, Hays hits them very well.
This season Hays hits .328/.394/.500/.894 against lefties. In his career, his slash line against lefties is .272/.328/.463/.791. Compare that to Brandon Marsh, whose slash line this season against righties is .279/.360/.482/.842.
Together, they make for a decent platoon. With Arozarena gone, and Luis Robert reportedly costing too much, their chances to get another true impact bat seemed slim. What they did instead was improve around the edges. Hays is a much better platoon partner for Marsh than Pache.
Austin Hays is owed $2.2 million for the rest of this season. After that, he has 1 more year of arbitration, before becoming a free agent in 2026. He was an All-Star in 2023 and has 66 HRs over the last 3 and a half seasons.
What Did It Cost?
Pache is not a real loss. He is an adequate glove but gave them nothing at the plate. They would have cut him to make room for any outfielder they traded for anyway. It is really a Seranthony Dominguez for Austin Hays trade.
At one point, Dominguez looked like a future closer. But his early career was marred by injuries. He finally lived up to his potential in 2022, when he was close to perfect during the playoff run. But then he struggled in 2023, and his 2024 has also been shaky.
It looked like he was turning things around. Across 19 games in May and June, he has a sub-2.0 ERA. But like many of his teammates, July has been a slog. In his last 7 outings, he had an ERA of 6.48. It was enough for the Phillies to move on from him, in order to bring in the righty bat they needed.
Still, it leaves them down a bullpen arm, which already looked like a need. But if they do make another trade for an impact reliever, you can look at it like upgrading from Seranthony, who we didn’t know if we could trust anyway. Maybe they even add 2 more bullpen arms.
Now that they have a platoon partner for Marsh, the bullpen becomes by far their biggest need.
