Dante Nori: Phillies Fell In Love With Total Package at Pick 27
For fans, reacting to the MLB draft is a bit tough. it is not like the NFL or NBA draft where we have seen many of them played in college. Also unlike those two leagues, we won’t see the players in the Majors for several seasons. So any Phillies fan would be forgiven for having no reaction when they selected High School Outfielder Dante Nori 27th overall on draft night.
The vast majority of Phillies fans had never heard that name before last night, let alone seen him play. So who is he? What tools does he have that made the Phillies snag him in the 1st round? What type of player does he project to be?
Phillies Director of Scouting Brian Barber spoke to the media after the draft. Here Is what he had to say about Dante Nori.
Dante Nori Is “The Total Package”
“We got to know him very well as a person. We got to know him very well as a player. We saw him play in 20-30 different games last summer. He’s a very good baseball player with good tools and an advanced bat. We just liked the total package. He’s sort of everything you’re looking for in a player.”
– Brian Barber
Clearly he is a guy they had their eyes on. Barber went on to say the decision was unanimous. That could just be a take, and Barber was mostly vague when describing what makes them love Nori so much, it seems like he was a guy they had their eyes on all along.
The thing that stands out the most about Nori is his speed. Both in the outfield and on the bases, his speed is top of the line. Scouts also love his eye at the plate and his hit tools.
“He takes balls, he swings at strikes, he hits the balls that he swings at,”
-Brain Barber
Where the questions come in is about his power. That is part of the game that has not developed yet. Even Barber said that of the 5 tools, his power would likely rank 4th or 5th.
All of this makes him sound a lot like someone already in the farm system, Justin Crawford. Like Crawford, Nori is also a Center Fielder. But with all the trade rumors, we do not yet know if Crawford will still be part of the Phillies system 3 weeks from now.
Comes From A Sports Background
Also like Crawford, Dante Nori has family ties to the game. Nori’s connections aren’t quite as grand though as being the son of a guy who won Gold Gloves and received MVP votes.
Nori’s grandfather, Fred Nori, played a couple of seasons in the Minor Leagues back in the ’60s. He went on to coach at Indiana and helped recruit Kyle Schwarber. His dad, Micah Nori, doesn’t coach baseball, but he is an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves and played baseball in College.
“It adds to who he is. This is a kid who has grown up around the baseball field and now in the NBA clubhouse and getting to be around elite athletes. It helped mature him. It helped add to his elite makeup.”
-Brain Barber
MLB.com Scouting Report On Dante Nori
“While he’s strong and shows average power during batting practice, he focuses on producing line drives rather than launching balls during games. Nori posts top-of-the-scale 60-yard dash times and is a well above-average runner who’s aggressive on the bases. A Mississippi State commit, he chases down balls from gap to gap as a no-doubt center fielder and his solid arm strength is another asset. He’s physically maxed out and offers no projection, but he has plenty of talent and scouts love his makeup as well.”
