Phillies Have Earned Our Patience, Give Them Time
The Phillies have been very good this year. They have the 2nd best record in baseball, just a half-game behind the Yankees who played 1 more game than them. They rank near the top of the league in nearly every category.
Their starting rotation is not only the best in baseball, they go deeper into games than any other rotation. Their bullpen has been among the best in baseball after a shaky first week. They are also 1st in the league at 313 runs.
But no team is perfect. Like any team in any sport, they have a few flaws. Taijuan Walker has been bad. Their OF is not giving them consistent production. Those are two issues they need to eventually address. But unlike most teams, they have earned the right to be patient.
The Phillies Don’t Need To Rush
If Taijuan Walker continues to pitch to an ERA over 6, he needs to be pulled. That may not happen this week. Ranger Suarez took a hit off his pitching hand and might miss a start or two. Meaning the guy who would have replaced Walker, Spencer Turnbull, will instead fill in for Ranger.
So we might see Walker for 1 or 2 more starts at least. Fans likely won’t be happy to see him, especially if he continues to struggle. But given how well they have played, try to have some patience. Even if he keeps pitching once Ranger Suarez is back, have patience.
Does Spencer Turnbull deserve to be in the rotation over him? Probably. But they also need to protect Turnbull. He has thrown 80 combined innings in the last 3 seasons. He is already at 44 in 2024. they cant just keep putting them out there for 20 more starts, and expect his arm to hold up.
We are going to see more Taijuan Walker. Getting angry about that is pointless. This is a very good team. if your biggest issue is your 5th best starter, you don’t have a real problem.
The same goes for the outfield. I would like to see them add a good OF bat before the deadline. But despite their OF not giving them production, and despite not having trea Turner, they are still putting up more runs than any other team.
Have Some Patience
We are not a patient fanbase. The Phillies have earned our patience though. Their few flaws are not as bad as the flaws on the 29 other teams. Even if Walker keeps pitching, or their OF keeps struggling at the plate, they will be fine for now.
Give them time. They don’t need to rush to make any moves or big decisions. Walker won’t be pitching in the playoffs. Is him making 6 or 7 more starts and going to kill them? No.
For the first time in our history as a fanbase, let’s just relax, and see what happens. We do not need to be our usual impatient selves. The Phillies deserve our patience.
