9 Names Philly Fans Love To Get Wrong
I was out and about over the weekend and heard Philly fans talking about old-school players they loved in Philly. That isn’t an atypical bar conversation, always fun. One of the guys said he used to love, “Hershey Hawkins”. He went on to say that Hershey would be even better today because all they do in the NBA now is shoot 3’s.
Of course, Hersey Hawkins is the former Sixers all-star guard. Hershey Hawkins is his Philadelphia name because we butcher names. Hershey may be a great guy, but none of us have seen him play. Why is messing up names such a big part of being a Philadelphian?

Don’t get me wrong, I love that we are this way. It is part of our personality. Alshon “Jeffries” never played a down for the Eagles, but that name has been said for years. “The Eagles would have won back-to-back Super Bowls if Jeffries didn’t drop that pass against the Saints”.
It took us 6 months to realize Nick Sirianni wasn’t named Frank when he was 1st hired. We never got LeGarrette “Blunt’s” name correct. We haven’t gotten Nick Castellanos down yet & he is in his 3rd year here. I am not 100% sure we are comfortable saying Realmuto.
We are still pretty fuzzy on how to pronounce Lindros (or Lindrose as many say). It is hilarious in the best way possible. We never bothered to get Halladay fully correct (RIP), it was always Holiday like Christmas. The list goes on and on, and it will only grow in time. What are the odds we get Matvei Michkov correct before 2030?
We seem to want to add a S to the end of names a lot. I want to know the origin of that too. When did it begin? If we find an old interview with Connie Mack does the interviewer call his Macks?
Where did this come from? Philly fans are the best in the world, even if we can’t quite say the names of the players we love.
