Phillies Weekend Opponent Guilty Of Historic Offensive Futility
The Philadelphia Phillies entered their longest homestand of the 2024 season at 6-6 with three of the weakest opponents in the majors staring them in the face. They kept their .500 pace with an underwhelming series split against a Pittsburgh Pirates team that deserves credit for a solid start.
The Colorado Rockies didn’t pose a legitimate threat, and the Phillies took care of business with a three-game sweep. They sunk the Rox to 4-15.
The Chicago White Sox enter the weekend series at Citizens Bank Park with a 3-15 record, and their offense has set the wrong kinds of records in an abysmal start.
The only teams in MLB history to be shut out 6 times in the first 16 games of a regular season:

White Sox Offense
The White Sox rank last in the majors with 2.11 runs per game. Consider that the Phillies started the season in somewhat of an offensive slump. The slow-starting bats have sparked conversation within a fan base hungry for a World Series. The Phillies are averaging 3.79 runs per game.
The South Siders enter the series with a .196 team batting average, which is remarkably three points higher than the 30th-place Minnesota Twins. Chicago ranks last in home runs, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.
Opposing pitchers shut out the White Sox in six of their first 16 games of the regular season. The 1907 Brooklyn Superbas were the last MLB team blanked that frequently to begin a season. If you don’t recognize the franchise, you’re probably not alone. They eventually became the the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers.
It wasn’t long ago that the White Sox put together a solid core with Tim Anderson, Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert Jr., and Yoan Moncada. Anderson is now with the Miami Marlins, and the other three respective hitters have struggled to stay healthy.
Jimenez has rejoined the team this week while Robert and Mocada remain on the injured list. The White Sox signed Tommy Pham to beef up an offense that hasn’t struck much fear into opposing pitchers.
Phillies Pitching Provides Mismatch
The starting rotation has helped the Phillies to an 11-8 record. They rank third in starters’ ERA and WAR, and they’ve thrown more innings than any other starting staff in the majors. The pitching probables favor the Phillies this weekend.
- Friday 4/19: Spencer Turnbull (1-0, 1.80 ERA) vs. Garrett Crochet (1-2, 3.57 ERA)
- Saturday 4/20: Zack Wheeler (0-3, 3.00 ERA) vs. Mike Soroka (0-2, 6.98 ERA)
- Sunday 4/21: Aaron Nola (2-1, 3.47 ERA) vs. Nick Nastrini (0-1, 3.60 ERA)
Rob Thomson also has the luxury of a deep bullpen with excellent complementary skill sets. The pitching staff has no reason to struggle against the White Sox offense, and the Phillies as a team have no excuses against an inferior opponent this weekend.
