Baseball Isn’t Football, Stop Treating It Like it Is
As a fanbase, no one will ever accuse us of lacking passion. We wear our fandom on our sleeves. When things are going well, it makes being a Philly fan more fun than being a fan in any other city. It is a joy being around your fellow fans in Philadelphia when they are on a playoff run. It’s why we embraced a terrible song such as “Dancing On My Own.” Even though that song kind of sucks, it was just too much fun singing it as a crowd after the Phillies beat the Braves for the 2nd straight time.
But that passion is a double-edged sword. Because it cuts the other way when things are not going well. If our teams lose, it puts a black cloud over the city. 12 games into the Phillies season, we already have people panicking because the team has yet to look like championship contenders. But here is something every single person worried about the slowish start needs to hear. Baseball is not Football. You need to stop treating it like it is.
The Baseball Season Is A Marathon
The Baseball season is 162 games long. 1 Phillies game, is the equivalent to .104 Football games. The amount of games the Phillies have played so far, 12, is equal to 1.26 Football games. Panicking about them being 6-6 right now, would be like complaining in 2022 that the Eagles did not look flawless against the Lions in week 1.
The season has barely started. They have played so many of their games in poor weather. Rain, cold, wind. It has not been what we call hitting weather. And as we have seen, a couple of games can completely swing any of these players’ stats. The recent Cardinals series swung Schwarber’s BA down 50 points. it swung Turner’s BA up 50 points. Rojas’s BA jumped by 100 points.
We are dealing with such a small sample size here. That same logic applies to the season. Have they looked great? No. But they aren’t the only contender whose bats have come out of the gate slow. Jayson Stark joined The Best Show Ever this week and pointed out that if you look at the teams who are hitting, nearly all of them have played the majority of their games in either the South or the West, where the weather is more hospitable for hitters.
Calm Down And Enjoy The Ride
If you treat every single baseball game like it is a must-win, or like an Eagles game, you are going to drive yourself insane. Every team, even the Dodgers, will have a stretch where they look awful. All 30 teams are going to lose 50 games at the very least. Some of those will come in a row. They will all be swept at some point. That is just what happens in a long baseball season.
We know this Phillies team is great. We have seen it in action. they have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball and a damn good lineup. Take a breath, and relax. It is 12 games. There is nothing of value we can take from these 12 games that should change how we felt coming into the season.

Are they perfect? No. There is no perfect team. Trea Turner’s defense is a real issue. We have his entire career leading up to these early struggles to know that is a real issue. The dumb base running is also a recurring issue. Those are flaws that are not going away. But we also know that this team can pitch, and they can hit. 12 games doesn’t change that.
The Phillies are going to be in the playoffs. once there, they will have to grapple with the Dodgers and Braves. We know the Phillies have played better than those teams in the playoffs in the past two years. That is when we can start treating every game like it is an NFL game. Until then, just enjoy watching baseball.
