Philadelphia Is One Of The Top Cities In The U.S. For Bakeries
In Pennsylvania, Philly cheesesteaks and hot pretzels immediately pop to mind when thinking about local cuisine. Add bakeries in Philadelphia to that list now. Food and Wine recently published a list of the top cities in the country to get delicious baked goods, and Philadelphia ranked #10.
Their feature emphasized how the pandemic led to an increase in people working on their baking skills all over America. As a result, many new bakeries popped up in major markets, as passion projects turned into well-established businesses.
“After the world slowly crawled back to normal, many turned their hobby into a full-time business, transforming the food scenes in small and big cities across the nation by opening bakeries, markets, and coffee shops,” Food and Wine said.
This ranking comes from a panel of experts who may have been fortunate enough to indulge in the sweetest spots in all major metros. Furthermore, citizens of these major metros seem to really be buying into specialized baked goods.
Seeing Seattle, Washington, Columbus, Ohio, and New York City all featured among the top cities, further emphasizes how popular bakeries remain in the modern culture.
Bakeries In Philadelphia
Coming in right behind Charleston, South Carolina, Philadelphia ranked as the tenth best bakery city in the country according to Food and Wine. They recognize unique items like fresh English muffins, peanut butter and jelly donuts, and pastries as items you can find throughout the city.
Last year, Eater: Philadelphia detailed the 15 most delicious bakeries in Philly. If you are looking for a vegan bakery, wedding cake, or a crusty croissant, this list has you covered.
Writer’s Recommendation
I recently paid a visit to High Street Bakery, which is located at 101 S. 9th Street. This place happens to be mentioned on Eater’s list as well. High Street offers a fresh baked bread of the month. However, as someone who never says no to lemon cake (or lemon frosting) the Lemon Pepper Poppy Seed Pound Cake is out of this world.
It’s the pepper that gives it an extra kick that you will remember and return there for. Lemon and pepper always seem to go so well together on everything. I’m not sure a dessert pound cake is what people think of, but that’s part of what makes it so tasty.
As an honorable mention, I must also give high praise to Angelo’s Pizzeria of South Philadelphia. Now, this is not a bakery, but their baked hoagie rolls with sesame seeds just bring their steaks and roasted pork sandwiches to another level.
