Andrew’s 3 Observations After The Phillies Opening Series
The Phillies started off the season 1-2 after dropping the first two games of their series to the Atlanta Braves and avoiding the sweep in game 3. Even though we made the point to NOT overreact early in the season… It took about 5 innings for people to lose their minds.
After every series this season, I will give you 3 observations. These could be anything from “this team is really good!” to “maybe it is time to add roles to the bullpen.” Sometimes I may even point out what fans are saying and if I agree with them or not. For this series, my 3 observations include fan behavior, lineup decisions, and speed.
Fans Complaining About Rob Thomson Pulling Zack Wheeler
Fans have allowed past decisions by Rob Thomson mess with their minds. Opening Day was a lot of fun until the 7th inning. The Phillies were up 2-0 through 6 and then Rob Thomson decided to pull Zach Wheeler. A lot of people reacted after the decision did not pay off.
First of all, it was Opening Day. I asked Matt Gelb before the season started how they would handle the starting pitchers early on. He told us that they would be eased into it. Wheeler was already at 89 pitches. If he starts the 7th inning, he is pushing 100 pitches in his opening day start. For context, there was only 1 pitcher in the entire league that threw at least 100 pitches in their first start. What did you expect?
Also, I mentioned that people complained about the move after the fact. We all celebrated that the bullpen was ranked number 1 across all of baseball. 9 outs needed with the “best bullpen in baseball” should have worked out.
The Phillies Lineup Decisions
This may be more of a question than an observation, but how will the lineup be handled all season? We are three games into the season and Brandon Marsh has only made one start. The Braves had two left-handed starters in this series and Marsh started both of those games on the bench.
Does this mean Marsh is officially considered a platoon player? Or is he just being eased back into the year after being hurt the majority of Spring Training? We will see how this one continues to play out for the Phillies.
Johan Rojas Is Fast
Johan Rojas is very very fast. This isn’t breaking news to anyone, but man is it fun to watch. If you have listened to the first two weeks of the show, you know where I stand when it comes to Rojas. I wanted him to start the season in AAA. So far to start the season he is 0-8, but has reached base 3 times.
While on base, Rojas has made his impact. He stole a base in Opening Day and then yesterday beat out a potential double play which eventually led to him scoring a run.
What Rojas does with his legs can change a game. The question will eventually be answered, is that enough to be in the starting lineup every day? For now, he is one of the few reasons the Phillies have a win this season.
