5 Reasons Ricky Bo Is Optimistic About The Phillies This Season
The Phillies are about to kick off the 2024 season. Expectations are high, as they should be. So close, yet so far away the last two seasons. Running it back has been the off-season theme, with limited moves and spots available when Spring Training started. Those spots have been filled and its go time! I have reason for optimism going into this year. Here is why…
Bryce Harper
He is the straw that stirs the drink…In 126 games last year, he hit 21 Homers and had 72 RBIs. Nice numbers (not Harper numbers though). He averages 33 HRs and 96 RBIs per 162 games. Bryce is coming off a season that was a lot of change. This year expect a relaxed and ready-to-go Harper. First base is now his and the injuries are behind him. I am looking at a monster year for Harper. Thinking close to 40 Hr’s with over 100 RBIs… I would like to see him make a run at another MVP!!
Trea Turner
Easy one here, he hit .266 with 26 HRs and 76 RBIs. These numbers aren’t bad, but dig deeper. On June 4th, he was hitting .232, on August 3rd .235… Not numbers we expected from a guy who is a career .296 hitter. I expect a bounce-back year. Homers up a little, RBIs up a little, but the one thing I expect from Turner is a much better defensive shortstop. The 23 errors from 2023 have to go away. The shortstop has to be a leader of your infield… Improvement here is Big.
The Bullpen
It’s rated very high amongst MLB teams. Why? How about their ability to end high-impact innings? The Phillies have at least four relievers that can close out games. I would include in this foursome, Seranthony Dominguez, Gregory Soto, Jose Alvarado, and from his work last season Jeff Hoffman. Between the first three guys, they do have some closing experience, with 112 saves between them. Keys to the pen…obviously stay healthy, Seranthony with a bounce-back year (I think he just needs to go into every game confident), and Soto with positive command. The arms are there, they will be a positive for this team.
The Starting Rotation
I’ll keep this brief. Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola are tremendous 1A and 1B top-of-rotation guys, no question. Ranger Suarez looks to be on a mission to get to that next level. He came to Spring Training on time, in shape, and ready to go. I am looking forward to a huge year from him. Cristopher Sanchez, just do you… Give the Phillies those five or six gutsy innings, and that will just be a bonus.
The Phillies Defense
Yeah, I went there. The outfield defense could rank pretty high with the combos they could throw out there. The fact that Johan Rojas made the team and should get a lot of work in center makes this outfield defense very good. Add a steady Castellanos in right and either Marsh or Pache in left, and that becomes an outfield that can cover some ground. I already talked about Turner, but Bohm has gotten better every year, and Stott should vie for a possible gold glove. Harper was good without a lot of practice at 1B, now he had a full offseason. J.T. Realmuto (enough said).
The Phillies running it back and it seems to be working, this team is good, Very good. When everything is said and done, they will be in the thick of it come October.
