Ranger Suarez Looks Poised For a Great Season in 2024
Ranger Suarez has been very good for the Phillies these past few years. Ever since he moved into the starting rotation, his numbers have been amongst the best for lefty starters in the league. In the playoffs, he has been even better. His 1.69 playoff ERA is 16th in MLB history amongst starters with at least 30 innings pitched. Which makes it odd to say he might break out this season. But he might be ready to take his game to another level.
Spring Training stats aren’t exactly reflective of what will happen in the regular season. But through 4 starts and 15 IPs, Ranger Suarez has given up 0 earned runs. More important than how sharp he looks though, is that he is available at this time of the year. In his career, he has made 4 starts in March or April. Visa issues and injuries have plagued the start to his past two seasons. He is ready this season though. Ranger is not only here, but he is healthy. He is getting a jump start he has never gotten to this point in his career.
Matt Gelb from The Athletic joined The Best Show Ever, and talked about how encouraging Ranger Suarez has been in Spring:
“Even if he had a 5.5 ERA, you’d be happy about him getting 4 starts in Sring Training… This is a guy who is always starting late… He looks like he is ready. Does that mean he will be better this year? I don’t know. But it is better for the goal of him getting 170 innings. He has never gotten there. He has never made 30 starts in the majors. These are all milestones they would like him to reach. They are encouraged. He has probably been the best development for them in Spring.”
The one thing that has limited Ranger Suarez to this point has been availability. As Gelb mentioned, his innings and games pitched have been limited. He pitched past the 6th inning just 7 times last year. but maybe being ready earlier, and having better conditioning, is the key to unlocking a new part of his game. He might never be the innings eater Wheeler or Nola are. But can he more consistently give you 6? Can he get past 5 in the playoffs?
Ranger Suarez One Of The Best Lefties in Baseball?
When Ranger has been on, he is one of the best Leftys in baseball. That’s not hyperbole. Jayson Stark told us that himself back in June.
“I would be hard pressed to think of 5 left handers in the sport you would rather have on the mound than this guy. The last 3 seasons the only left handers in baseball with lower ERAs than him are Carlos Rodon, Max Fried, and Shane McClanahan. Then it is Ranger and Kershaw tied at 2.80. That is pretty incredible.
He is back to October Ranger. Maybe even 2021 Ranger. It is incredible to see. He throws 5 pitches. Right now he dots them wherever he wants. There is no hard contact on anything. The hitters don’t seem like they can recognize what is coming. They chase the sinker, the changeup, and the curveball over and over again. He has changed the way you would look at this whole team.”
Those numbers might have changed a bit since then. Ranger had a rough month of July following Stark making those statements. But the sentiment remains the same. When Ranger is on, there are few left-handers as capable as him.
The Phillies Rotation Might Be Special
This has the making of a special season for Ranger Suarez. For once, he is ready to go right from the start of the season. The Phillies know they have a true Ace in Zack Wheeler. Aaron Nola has been a bit more of a wild card. We have seen him look great, we have seen him struggle. But he tends to have his best seasons, coming off of those bad seasons. So he may be poised for a great bounceback season. They also have Cristopher Sanchez who is coming off a breakout year and could be poised to take the next step as well.
If Ranger takes the next step as well, we might be talking about the Phillies having the best rotation in baseball.
