Eagles Are Likely Targeting These 3 Positions In The Draft
The draft is a bit over a month away. Day 1 kicks off Thursday, April 25th. But what might the Eagles do at pick 22? Will they finally take a corner? Does Howie grab Lane Johnson’s eventual replacement? Or will the Haason Reddick situation force him to take another Edge Rusher? It will likely be 1 of those 3.
Tim McManus joined The Best Show Ever this week and talked about what he thinks the Eagles will do in the draft:
Offensive Tackle
“If I can give you two, I would say Offensive Tackle and cornerback. You need that eventual replacement for Lane Johnson… If you can get a swing tackle, maybe someone who can bump inside for a year. That seems to line up both with what they do as an organization, and where there is good talent at pick 22.”- Tim McManus
Howie Roseman has made 13 1st-round picks since taking over the Eagles. That is not counting the one year Chip Kelly banished him. 3 of those picks were for an Offensive Lineman. Lane Johnson, Danny Watkins, and Andre Dillard. He also spent 4 day 2 picks on OL. That will always be an option for them, even if it is not a clear and present need. He took Andre Dillard with the intention of him replacing Jason Peters in a year or 2.
That never happened because Jordan Mailata won the job from him when Peters eventually moved on. But it shows Roseman’s willingness to use a 1st on someone who might not play right away. He did the same thing with Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens with 2nd round picks. Both were tapped as Jason Kelce replacements. Cam Jurgens sat his first season, and Landon Dickerson would have if not for an Isaac Seumalo injury.
Would it be wise, given their other needs? Maybe not. But it will not be shocking in the slightest if they go OT in round 1. As Tim suggested, they might even have that person compete with Tyler Steen for the RG spot in year 1.
Cornerback
“And corner, they haven’t hit it yet. there is still a lot of offseason left. As we know Howie finds different ways to get it done throughout all through the year… Roseman does not have a good track record drafting and developing corners. They usually have to rely on trades or free agency. But do they buck that trend if there is a corner they are passionate about?”
Howie Roseman has never invested a 1st round pick in a corner. The last time the Eagles did was Lito Shepard in 2002. He last spent a day 2 pick on a corner in 2017 when he drafted Sidney Jones. Since then, Howie has not invested more than a 4th round pick in a corner.
But it’s not like he doesn’t value the spot. He traded for Darius Slay, then signed, and re-signed James Bradberry. They also traded for Ronald darby during the Super Bowl season. Howie is willing to invest at Corner. They value the position highly. He doesn’t seem to trust himself drafting them highly though. That could change this year.
Nearly every beat writer who has joined the station said the same thing. This could be the year. The 1st-round has great corner depth. There are mock drafts with as many as 7 corners going in the 1st round, many going right around pick 22. And after their busy offseason, it is probably their biggest remaining need. They need to get better, and younger at corner. The draft is their best chance to do it.
Edge Rusher
“I’ll add Edge in there too because there will be good Edge players around there.”
Right now, Edge rusher is not a need. But if Haason Reddick is moved, and it is starting to sound like it he will be moved, it could become a need. Josh Sweat is in the last year of his deal. They added Bryce Huff, but he has never played a full-time role. And we have not seen nearly enough from Nolan Smith to trust he is ready to break out.
Plus, DL is the one position Howie likes drafting more than OL. We told you he spent 3 firsts on Offensive linemen, but he spent 7 on Defensive Linemen. Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, Marcus Smith, Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, and Derek Barnett were all drafted with him in charge. We can quibble over how much say he had in the Marcus Smith pick, but the other 6 were him. To be fair, most of them worked out. Cox and Graham are two guys who will go into the Ring of Honor. The jury is still out on Carter, Smith, and Davis. But Barnett and Smith were busts.
If Reddick stays, there is no reason for them to take an Edge. But if they trade him, don’t rule it out.
