Eagles Bolster Their Offense By Stealing Saquon Barkley From The Giants
All week we heard rumors that the Eagles may be in on Saquon Barkley. I will be honest and say I didn’t buy it for a second at the time. It is so outside the type of move Howie Roseman typically makes, that for me, it felt like there was no chance. But now here we are, Saquon Barkley is an Eagle. He signed a 3-year $37.75 million deal with the Eagles, that could be worth up to $46.75 million. $26 million of that is guaranteed.
Barkley is easily one of the most talented backs in the league. He has had injury problems and is coming off of a down year. But in New York, he was playing behind a bad O-Line, with poor QB play. He pretty much had to do it all on his own there. Now he will be behind the best run-blocking line in the league, with far better talent around him to draw attention away.
Is giving an RB a big deal good football? The case is usually no. Most of these deals end up blowing up. But Barkley is only 27, and it is only a 3-year deal. So maybe it will work better than other ones we have seen in the past. Plus with the cap going up as much as it did. $12 million per year is not as much as it used to be.
The Eagles clearly decided what they had on offense was not good enough. So they add one of the most dynamic players on that side of the ball in the league. When healthy, few RBs are better running the ball or catching it. It is a very non-Eagles move, but maybe they needed to shake up the way they do things after last season. Having a elite RB like that can only help open things up for the rest of the Eagles offense. He is a great pass blocker too, something the Eagles RBs struggled with last year.
The offense should be very good next year. Now they need to keep improving the defense.
