Report: Eagles Expected To Pursue Vic Fangio For DC
The Eagles Defensive Coordinator search could be over very soon. Vic Fangio and the Miami Dolphins have parted ways. And according to a report by Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler, he will be the top target of the Eagles, with a deal expected to eventually come.
Vic Fangio was of course who the Eagles wanted to hire last season. But Jonathan Gannon took the Head Coach job in Arizona somewhat late. And before he left, Fangio had already taken the DC job with the Dolphins. So they settled for hiring Sean Desai, which obviously did not work out. But one year later they may land the coach they wanted all along.
Fangio has 23 years of experience calling plays on defense. 20 as the defensive coordinator, and 3 as the head coach of the Broncos. In 10 of those seasons, his defense was top 10 in points allowed. in 2 more he was top 15. His defense was 10th in yards allowed and 8th in takeaways last season with the Dolphins, but just 22nd in points allowed.
His defense is very similar to what the Eagles have been running the past few seasons. Both Jonathan Gannon and Sean Desai came from the Fangio coaching tree.
Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni got a chance to comment on the report as it broke live during their press conference. They were however not forthcoming if the rumors were true or not.
Though despite them not being forthcoming, the move makes a ton of sense. We know they wanted him last season, and he is the master of the scheme they have been running the past few seasons. So don’t be surprised if it turns out Vic Fangio is on the Eagles sideline next season. It is a hiring that is a year in the making.
