The Schedule Makers May Have Dealt Eagles A Bad Hand Early
The Eagles get to play the second-place schedule this time around in 2024. Though many consider that a huge advantage I’m not sure that they have an edge due to the game in Brazil to start and the Bengals and Ravens games being on the road. I’ve written about it before and it remains a dark horse storyline to watch.
Early on this upcoming season, the Eagles have reason for concern with the way the schedule makers set things up. Can they handle the challenge?
First Issue: The Boys are in Brazil
Instead of getting to ease into a season, the NFL feels the need to try and “build their brand” in a country that hasn’t truly shown any great desire to adopt it. Don’t get me started on the city they chose, one where the country puts out warnings on safety for foreign travelers.
It’s the problem of trying to incorporate a brand new offensive and defensive scheme while in a disrupted environment. They won’t truly have any dry runs because they don’t tend to use their starters in the preseason games. I could imagine a long flight and a new plan being one toxic cocktail.
Second Issue: The Packers may be the young NFC contender this year
Last season the Detroit Lions stormed onto the scene as the young, upstart team to make a move in the NFC. Over the last 8 games in the 2023 season the Packers followed a very similar script. Like Detroit the season before Green Bay appears to be trending towards contending for NFC supremacy.
This is a game where the Eagles would have truly benefitted from home-field advantage at the Linc. Instead, Jeff Lurie volunteered them for a neutral site game where that advantage is lost. You could argue that the Eagles most dangerous “home” opponent gets a free pass from the hysteria of South Philly scrutiny.

Third Issue: The Eagles offense may need time to warm up
How will Jalen Hurts handle running the new Kellen Moore offense in an unfamiliar setting? The terminology and plan are quite counter to the junior high level expertise displayed by Brian Johnson in 2023.
Will it be easy to comprehend and more importantly implement? Hurts has complained in the past about how hard it is to deal with new coordinators year after year. How quickly he can escalate the learning curve will have a lot to say about their chances in September.
Fourth Issue: The Falcons have all the weapons to confound a young defense
If Vic Fangio’s defense isn’t ready for prime time early, we are going to learn that quickly. They get the Friday night marquee in Brazil followed by a home debut in Philadelphia on a Monday night vs the Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta is loaded with offensive talent and will provide a critical challenge to the Eagles young secondary. Kirk Cousins has won and lost in his career vs Philadelphia, but always throws for a lot of yardage against the Eagles.
