Nick Sirianni May Already Be On The Hot Seat
A few months ago, even the thought of a change at head coach for the Eagles would be insane. Nick Sirianni had just led his team to the Super Bowl, even if they did come up just short. They were among the favorites to get back this year too. But a few weeks can make a lot of difference. And right now the Eagles are in the midst of an embarrassing collapse.
Not only have they lost 4 of their last 5 games, but they did so in embarrassing fashion. The 49ers and Cowboys blew them out. Then the Seahawks went down the field in the last minutes of the game to score a go-ahead TD. They barely escaped the first Giants game with a win after multiple boneheaded errors. But this past game was the worst loss of all. They let a 3-win Cardinals team come to town and have their way on offense. Now they will likely be the 5-seed, and it would be hard to find anyone who feels good about their chances in the playoffs.
So what happened? Well to start, the defense just isn’t very good. You can’t blame Nick for that. That part is almost all on Howie Roseman for poor roster construction. But the offense is not lacking in talent. On paper, they should be one of the best offenses in the league. But week after week we see them underperform. And as much as people love to blame Brian Johnson, this is Nick Sirianni’s offense. He has said it himself. He makes the scheme, Johnson just calls the plays. So by Sirianni’s own admission, all complaints about how the Eagles offense is run should be filed directly to the head coach himself.
…
But it is not just that. Because worse than the offense looking uneven and the playcalling being uninspired and predictable, is how the locker room seems to have fallen apart. There is finger-pointing, anonymous leaks to members of the media, and for weeks the overall vibe of the Eagles locker room has been miserable. Even when they were winning, it didn’t seem like a locker room that was having fun. It felt like a bunch of coworkers at a work retreat just trying to run out the clock so they could go home.
One report even suggests that the reason AJ Brown has refused to talk to the media the past two weeks is that he is angry about the playcalling. We don’t know if that is true or not, but AJ Brown was visibly frustrated late in the game after the Eagles settled for a field after 3 straight conservative play calls. And that type of conservative playcalling has become a trend.
Zach Berman recently mentioned on Twitter that of the 19 times the Eagles have been 3rd and 15 or longer, they have attempted only 5 passes of 7 yards or more. Everything else has either been a short dump-off, or a run. They actually converted 3 of those 5 attempts where they threw it past the sticks. Including this one in the Giants game.
But if you don’t try and convert, you can’t. And too often the Eagles have gotten into this long conversion chances, and just gave up. And giving up like that against the Cardinals may have literally cost them the game. They settled for a FG and left the Cardinals more than enough time to drive down the field and score the game-winning TD.
The players can’t make magic happen if you don’t even give them a chance. You have AJ Brown and Devonta Smith, use them. But Nick’s conservative decision-making has continually put the Eagles in bad spots.
Between locker room issues, a team collapse., and a complete failure to maximize the talent on offense, it is all pretty damning of Nick Sirianni. Does that mean he should be fired? Not yet. But his feet definitely need to be held to the fire. Nick has not done a good enough job leading this team this year. And he has taken all the goodwill, and all the rope that run to the Super Bowl bought him, and burned it all in one year.
…
There was also this “report” from Josina Anderson that is worth mentioning.
It is way too vague to put too much stock in. But she could only really be talking about the Eagles or Giants. Ron Rivera, or anyone with Washington, losing their job would not qualify as unexpected. Is she talking about Nick? Maybe. But Josina knows something. As annoying and unhelpful as these teases are, she does have good sources. Someone said something to her. So it is worth at least keeping an eye on.
…
If the Eagles suddenly figure it out and get back to playing how they should in the playoffs, all this talk will go away. But the very fact people are talking about Nick’s job security, and that it is not without merit, is troubling. The Eagles fired Doug not too long after winning a Super Bowl. Don’t expect them to give Sirianni any extra leash just because he made it there and lost. If Jeffrey Lurie feels like his best chance to win is with a change, he would make a change.
He probably will be back for at least one more year. But the honeymoon phase with Nick is over. And it is not out of the question that Nick could now be on the hot seat going forward.
