It Might Be Time To Bench James Bradberry
Coming into the offseason, most Eagles fans thought James Bradberry was a goner. He was a free agent, and coming off of an All-Pro year. Everyone assumed he would get a big deal elsewhere. But now 14 games after he resigned with the Eagles, fans may be wishing someone else did sign him. Bradberry has been bad this year. And last night’s loss to the Seahawks brought it all to a head.
In a game where Darius Slay was out, and Kelee Ringo was getting some of his first major reps as a pro, the Seahawks chose to pick on James Bradberry instead. Over half of their passing yards were against him. Including the game-winning play where Jaxon Smith-Njigba beat him to put Seattle ahead.
James Bradberry trailing behind people has been a trend. The 30-year-old seems to have lost a step. And Cornerback is one position where it can all go quickly if you lose speed. In an age where every WR runs a 4.4 40 or lower, you need to be fast enough to keep up with those guys. And maybe Bradberry just doesn’t have that burst anymore to keep up with some of the best young WRs around the NFL. Which explains why we keep seeing him trailing behind his guy this season.
The problem is right now, they do not have the options behind him to make a change. Kelee Ringo filled in well for Slay, but they have already tried Josh Jobe and Eli Ricks, and neither played very well. Perhaps when Slay does get back, you try going with him and Ringo. But for now, they pretty much need to rely on Bradberry. And he will likely keep struggling to cover faster WRs. That problem we can blame Howie Roseman for.
The good news is that his contract is not crippling. He is only a $4.8 million cap hit next season, and then there is a potential out on the contract before the 2025 season. So it is not like they are locked into him long-term. But they do need to improve. The Eagles have failed to bring in young talent at corner for too long. It is catching up to them. They have Ringo, and not much else youth to build on at corner. And while most of us loved bringing both Slay and Bradberry back at the time, it is now starting to look like a mistake.
