Not Even Jerry Jones Wants To Ban The Tush Push
Eagles may have struggled these past two weeks. But there is still one thing they do better than any other team, the Tush Push. In a yard-to-go situation, whether it is for a TD or First Down, the Eagles are pretty much automatic. The only times it has failed for them this season is when they have been called for a penalty. And most of the time that happens it’s not even a real penalty. While other teams struggle to execute the Tush Push, the Eagles have mastered it.
The play is not without controversy though. There are lots of people around the league that want to see the play banned. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is counted among those detractors. They say nonsense like “it’s not a Football play”, or “It’s not pretty.” But what no one can do is offer a real reason why the play should actually be banned. They just don’t like seeing the Eagles convert every single 3rd or 4th and 1.
But there is one very influential person on the Eagles’ side. And it is coincidentally the person with the most to gain by seeing the play banned. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
Jones is on the competition committee that will debate the play this offseason. And you would think he would jump at a chance to hurt his team’s biggest rival. But it seems like he does have some amount of honor, and won’t just ban a play to help his team. The Eagles currently have no representatives on the Competition Committee. But if they have Jerry Jones on their side, it feels like there is a decent chance the play sticks around another year.
It has mostly been people in the media complaining. Very few players, coaches, or owners have publicly come out against the play. Which tells you all you need to know. The Tush Push should stand. You can’t ban a play just because one team is good at it. Thankfully Jerry Jones seems to get that.
