Fletcher Cox Sounds Off On Monday Night Football Flex
Fans of the Philadelphia Eagles probably want to see their team back on the field as quickly as possible. The NFL decided to flex the Week 15 game against the Seattle Seahawks to Monday Night Football, however. If you’re frustrated about that, also know that Fletcher Cox agrees with you.
The Monday Night Football Flex
The 12th-year defensive tackle spoke his mind as a guest on The John Kincade Show.
“We have a bunch of short weeks coming up, and as a player, a guy who has been around this league, we don’t appreciate that. I don’t, myself, and I don’t care about voicing my opinion about that. I feel like they shouldn’t do that. It’s okay to flex games, but this slate in the season and we’re coming off road games, Monday Night games, late games, it’s just one of them things. We get paid to play, so we do what we’ve got to do, but at the end of the day, as a guy that’s been around, you don’t appreciate that.” -Fletcher Cox
The league implemented the ability to flex games to Sunday Night Football in 2006. They added Thursday Night Football and Monday Night Football in 2023. The rule was always likely to affect a contending team like the Eagles.
The extra day of rest might help the Eagles recover from the loss against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14. The extra day on the West Coast after a brutal-six game schedule certainly doesn’t help though. If a team leader who has a lot of influence in the locker room directly disagrees enough to criticize the scheduling publicly, it’s tough to say the Eagles will benefit on the field.
It’s the fans that suffer additionally.
NFL Scheduling
Part of the beauty of Eagles fandom is the ability to look forward to Sunday afternoons. The Eagles will now play their third Monday Night Football game this season. They’ve played on national TV twice on Sunday night. They even played their home opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday Night Football in a situation that was awkward and unexciting for the fans in attendance.
The continued expansion of the NFL schedule has saturated the product. The league added a Black Friday game in 2023. They also expanded the international showcase efforts by adding games in Frankfurt, Germany to air before the traditional game windows in the United States. They even scheduled simultaneous Monday Night Football games three times.
Some fans without a direct rooting interest might enjoy the added game windows. It’s also possible, even if it’s unlikely, that some fans with a rooting interest enjoy attending or watching games in these specialized windows.
The majority of Eagles fans, especially season-ticket holders, aren’t enthusiastic about how the 2023 schedule included a grand total of two Sunday home games at 1pm.
The NFL wants more eyeballs on their prime-time matchups. More viewers mean more money, and they’re going to succeed by expanding their audience by adding an attractive team like Eagles in playoff contention.
Does it enhance the fan experience? That’s completely irrelevant to the NFL’s decision.
