Zach Ertz Waived By Cardinals- Is A Reunion With the Eagles In Store?
A Super Bowl Champion is on the market. Zach Ertz has requested and was granted his release by the Arizona Cardinals. He heads to waivers but is expected to clear them. And once he becomes a free agent, he is expected to sign with a Super Bowl contender, for a chance at a second ring. And it just so happens that he used to play with the team that are currently favorites to win the Super Bowl this year. The Eagles. J.J. Watt of all people was the first to report the news.
…
For years, Zach Ertz was the best target on offense the Eagles had. From 2016 through 2019 he was the Eagles leading receiver in both yards and catches. 4 straight seasons. He is 5th all-time in yards, 7th in TDs, and 2nd in catches in team history. And it was Ertz who caught the game-winning touchdown in the franchise’s first-ever Super Bowl.
And the Eagles find themselves in need of TE depth. Dallas Goedert has been out with a fractured forearm. And while it seems he could be back way earlier than we thought, the depth behind him has been an issue. Jack Stoll is a good blocker but offers next to nothing in the pass game. Grant Calcaterra is constantly hurt, and even when healthy has not produced. Albert O can’t even see the field. Ertz is not the guy he used to be. But he is an upgrade over what the Eagles have behind Goedert. And it would obviously be a great story with one of the best Tight Ends in Eagles history returning to try to help them get a second Lombardi Trophy.
He is expected to clear waivers. Then he can decide where he goes, and given the history here, the Eagles certainly seem to have a foot in the door at the very least. Ravens would be another option that makes sense for him given the Mark Andrews injury. But a reunion with Zach Ertz could be in the cards.
