Can you still complain about the 7-1 Philadelphia Eagles?
The Philadelphia Eagles are 7-1, and no other team in the NFL has just one blemish on their record. They have scored 28 PPG, and only two teams are currently scoring at a better clip.
Their defense, on the other hand, is currently 18th allowing 21.5 PPG. It’s a mixed bag. There are reasons, and there are excuses. Let’s examine.
Defensive Performance Vs. Commanders in 2023
Giving up 31 points to the Commanders is definitely critique worthy. Doing it twice in the span of a month is ridiculous. The 62 points allowed in those two games mean that they allowed 110 points in their other five games. 21.5 points a game is still more than a defense with this talent should allow, but 31 makes zero sense.
Making Sam Howell Look Like An MVP
The Eagles allowed Sam Howell to pass for 397 yards and four touchdowns, completing 75% of his passes. If Pat Mahomes or Joe Burrow does this to you, it’s understandable.
If Howell does it, that’s absurd. This was after he completed 70.7% of his passes and he threw for 290 yards and one touchdown in the first matchup.
Sean Desai Is Getting A Relative Free Pass
Remember Jonathan Gannon’s first season when his defense was allowing high completion percentages against top quarterbacks? Many Eagles fans were losing their minds.
Now it seems the old adage of “be careful what you wish for” comes into play. Gannon’s defense tended to dominate poor QBs. Desai has a defense making guys like Sam Howell look like Pro Bowlers. It’s completely fair to start to ask questions about what needs to be changed in the way this defense approaches opponents.
The Same Explanation
“We don’t want to be playing our best ball in October” has been echoed by coaches and players alike. Thank God we are turning the calendar to November! I’m so tired of that being the talking point.
This wasn’t a struggling team going into 2023. They are the defending NFC Champions and lost the Super Bowl by three points!
The offense is producing points but continues to confound with red zone issues that seemed to be correcting themselves. The defense is not performing up to par.
The Reality
I appreciate the fact that Nick Sirianni seems to avoid embarrassing losses. The Chiefs have two. The Cowboys have two. The 49ers have three. The Bengals have three.
The gauntlet of six games ahead looks a little less daunting for the 7-1 Eagles. With seven wins banked, even going 3-3 in the next six games could be good enough depending on how real the Lions are. You must split with Dallas, and the 49ers game would be critical to sealing up the top seed.
.@JalenHurts put up season-highs in completions (29), passing yards (319), passing TDs (4) and passer rating (135.7) in today's win vs. Washington.
