Zack Wheeler Continues Playoff Dominance, Gives Phillies 3-2 NLCS Lead
Zack Wheeler looks like one of the best playoff pitchers in MLB history.
The Philadelphia Phillies took a 3-2 lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Game 5 of the NLCS on Saturday night.
Zack Wheeler- Playoff Ace
The Phillies went up 2-0 in the NLCS at Citizens Bank Park, but they let the Diamondbacks creep back into the series in two road games. Wheeler luckily showed up at the right moment.
The ace of the staff threw seven innings and allowed just one run in a Game 5 victory. The length of his start took the pressure off an exhausted Phillies bullpen and made life easy for Rob Thomson in the late innings.
Wheeler has now thrown 26 innings during the postseason and allowed only six earned runs. Philadelphia fans will always glorify the competitive drive of Roy Halladay. They’ll cherish the memory of Cole Hamels and the 2008 World Series. Wheeler is getting close to the same place in Phillies history.
Phillies Take 3-2 Lead
Two straight losses in Arizona slowed the momentum of a red-hot Phillies team. However, they came out with a vengeance in the 1st inning of Game 5. Bryson Stott drove home Kyle Schwarber home for a 1-0 lead, and Bryce Harper scored on a double steal to make it 2-0 before the D’Backs even came to the plate.
The early lead gave the Phillies their swagger back, and it helped Wheeler get rolling.
Schwarber went deep for his 11th career home run in the NLCS, passing Albert Pujols for the most ever. Harper and J.T. Realmuto added long balls of their own to build the Philadelphia lead.
Jeff Hoffman, Seranthony Dominguez, and Matt Strahm closed the door for the Phillies at Chase Field.
Game 6 at Citizens Bank Park
The Phillies will return to Citizens Bank Park with a 3-2 series lead. One more win will get them their second consecutive National League pennant. The Red October crowd has another chance to witness history on Monday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m.
Aaron Nola will take the hill for the Phillies against Merill Kelly of the Diamondbacks.
Zack Wheeler gets through 7 innings with 99 pitches.
