Zack Wheeler Dazzles In Game 1 Win Over The Marlins
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - OCTOBER 03: Zack Wheeler #45 of the Philadelphia Phillies pitches during the first inning against the Miami Marlins in Game One of the Wild Card Series at Citizens Bank Park on October 03, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
One win down, one more to go. The Phillies take game 1, thanks in large part to a gem of a performance by Zack Wheeler. He lifted them to a 4-1 win over the Marlins. Wheeler went 6.2 innings, giving up just 1 run, and 4 hits. Two of which never reached the outfield. It is a continuation of his great postseason performances last season and starts to put him in a rare category among Phillies pitchers in terms of postseason pitching.
For most of the game, Zack Wheeler barely broke a sweat. Through the first 6 innings, he had allowed only a single hit. And even in the 7th inning where he finally gave up a run, the Marlins still were not hitting him very hard. Josh Bell hit a looping double and almost got thrown out at 2nd. And then Jake Burger and Bryan De La Cruz both got infield singles. Burgers would have been an out, but Wheeler was too slow covering first base.
Jose Alvarado came in to clean up the 7th inning and then got the first two outs in the 8th. Jeff Hoffman got the final out of the 8th. Then Craig Kimbrel came in to get the save and apart from a leadoff double did so stress-free by his standards. Zack Wheeler got credit for the win. Surprisngly just his 2nd playoff win, despite how great he was in the playoffs last season.
The Phillies did not put up crooked numbers at the plate, but they did get to Jesus Luzardo. Luzardo had stifled the Phillies lineup in the regular season. But they scored 3 runs in 4 innings against him. And it could have been more, but they stranded a few runners on the bases. Harper was the only Phillies batter to not get a hit off of him. But he would hit a single later in the game, and eventually come around on a Nick Castellanos double.
Now if the Phillies can take either game 2 or 3 they will get an NLDS rematch with the Atlanta Braves. Aaron Nola takes the mound tomorrow night for the Phillies. He will face off with another lefty Braxton Garrett. Garrett has a 4,5 ERA against the Phillies in his career.
The Phillies 26-Man Roster For The Playoffs- Wild Card Round
Red October is back! After a long, often stressful season, the Phillies are back in the postseason. Last night they beat the Pirates 3-2, to clinch not just a spot in the playoffs, but the fourth overall seed. Ensuring they will have Home Field Advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Citizens Bank Park will once again be rocking with the sound of nearly 43,000 rabid Phillies fans, for what will hopefully be another extended playoff room. Just ideally with a better ending this time.
The Phillies never made it easy on us, even in that final game. Like last season, they started off a bit of a mess. Trea Turner was having the worst season of his career. Bryce Harper was struggling to hit for power coming off Tommy John Surgery. Kyle Schwarber was hitting below the Mendoza Line. They were once again heading into June out of the playoff race.
But just like last year, things started to turn around. They went from a mediocre team in the first two months, to one of the best teams in baseball over the last 4. Eventually, Bryce Haper found his power and still finished with over 20. Trea Turner’s season turned around after a Standing Ovation and he was better than almost any hitter in baseball over the last two months. Kyle Schwarber is still under the Mendoza Line but has 45 HRs, 100 RBIs, 100 Runs, and 120 Walks. And even Aaron Nola is finishing the season on a bit of a roll.
It feels like they have that magic again. And unlike last season, they are not backing in. They took care of their business and clinched the 4 seeded with 5 more games to go. And they will get to start the playoffs at home, rather than in St.Louis.
