5 Reasons D’Andre Swift Is Dominating for the Philadelphia Eagles
D’Andre Swift has stormed out of the gates with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. After minimal action in Week 1, he took off for 175 yards in Week 2 and 130 in Week 3.
Adam Schefter joined The John Kincade Show to talk about Philadelphia’s 3-0 start, the dominance of Jalen Carter, and an upcoming matchup against the Washington Commanders. He also touched on Swift’s breakout for the Eagles, pointing to five reasons for the success.
Schefter on D’Andre Swift
“Number one, I think he was hurt last year. I don’t think he was fully right…I think this year, he looks like he’s feeling healthier because the talent has always been there.” -Adam Schefter
He certainly looks healthy with that strong burst out of the backfield. The Eagles are gaining chunk yards on the ground at will handing the ball to Swift.
“He’s an enormously gifted running back, but you combine (that) with the fact that you’re running behind a great offensive line where he’s not getting touched a lot of the times.” -AS
The dominance of the Eagles offensive line during the Jeff Stoutland era is no secret. They cleared outrageous running lanes against the helpless Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football. Swift has the luxury of the beef in front of him paving his way to the secondary.
“You combine it with the fact that he’s back home.” -AS
By now, you’ve heard that Swift is from Philadelphia. The national broadcasts certainly don’t mind shouting his local Catholic school.
“You combine it with the fact that he’s in a contract year with a lot to prove.” -AS
Whether fans like to acknowledge it or not, professional athletes tend to perform better in contract years. If Swift can use the advantages at hand, he can earn himself a big payday this offseason.
“(It motivates him) that a team essentially gave him away for nothing.” -AS
The Detroit Lions sent Swift to the Eagles for a fourth-round pick in 2025. If Swift leaves in free agency, the Eagles will benefit because of the NFL’s compensatory draft pick formula. They could potentially pick in the fourth round in 2024 instead of 2025 as an indirect result of the trade. The two teams also swapped 2023 seventh-round picks as part of the deal.
Running Back Rotation
Schefter described “a perfect confluence of events” that has put Swift into position to reach second place in the NFL in rushing with 308 yards, behind only Christian McCaffrey.
However, it doesn’t mean Swift is going to dominate the snap count for the rest of the season. He carried 16 times on Monday while Kenny Gainwell carried 14 times. Swift was on the field for 43 snaps, and Gainwell logged 37.
Boston Scott will soon return from a concussion to resume a role in the “running back by committee” approach.
However, if Swift continues to run the ball with such incredible conviction, can Nick Sirianni justify the even running back rotation?
