The Braves Fear The Phillies In A Short Series
Trauma can be hard to overcome. When something bad happens to you, it can linger for a long time. And the Braves are still dealing with the trauma of last October. Braves fans still sometimes wake up in a sweat after dreaming about Bryson Stott’s long at bat, or Rhys Hoskins’ bat spike. They still relive that 5-game series where the Phillies ran over them in just 4-games.
But apparently, it is not just Braves fans who fear the Phillies. So many people have told us that the Braves themselves do not want to see the Phillies in a short series again. With Jayson Stark being the latest person to come onto the Fanatic and say the Braves are still thinking about last year’s 5-game series.
“The Phillies are not as good as the Braves, because the Braves are better than everyone in the sport. But the Phillies can beat the Braves in a short series, and both teams know that. The Braves know that because they lived it.”
The Phillies are in the Braves’ head. The Braves have seen this play before, and know how it ends. Yes, they are the better team, but they were the better team last year, and it didn’t mean anything. But it is not just that 5-game series that has them nervous. Because as Jayson Stark went on to mention, these last two series also have the Braves worried.
“But the other reason is how many times have we seen the Phillies score huge runs late on the Braves bullpen? Last week there were the incredible home runs that Harper and Turner hit late off of the closer Iglesias. In today’s 10th inning, they had great at-bats and scored those two runs off of AJ Minter, who is their alternate closer. That is in both team’s heads. “
And yes, the Braves have done the same thing to the Phillies bullpen. But the Braves have done that to every team all year long. Not many teams have been able to do it back to them. And even though the Braves still won many of those games, both teams know that the Phillies are capable of doing something no one else can. Keeping up with the Braves bats.
Does that all mean the Phillies will beat the Braves if that 5-game series comes to fruition? Of course not. The Braves will still be heavy favorites. But the Phillies were underdogs in every series last year. And they still lost just two games on their way through the NL playoffs. And taking 2 of 3 from the Braves in Atlanta will only make the Braves more nervous about having to face the Phillies in a short series.
