Two weeks does not an NFL season make
The NFC contenders look much improved while the Eagles most certainly do not! Am I sounding the alarm? Hell no!
That doesn’t mean that my concern meter isn’t more than it was in August.
The 49ers look smooth coming out of the gates. – CONCERN LEVEL 8.5
The 49ers had a great year last year, and they are picking up where they left off. They get the highest concern level because of the weaker NFC West, which may be their path to the top seed in the NFC.
The Cowboys appear complete, and THAT is the problem. – CONCERN LEVEL 8
Before the season, I thought that the Cowboys were the biggest threat to the Eagles. Considering the fact they could block them from the first goal of winning the NFC East, they are living up to that billing.
The key for Dallas will be navigating the three toughest opponents each team shares on the road. Remember, Dallas has to travel to San Francisco and then Buffalo and Miami in December. The Eagles have all those opponents at home.
Dallas looks great on defense, and the balance they are showing is eerily similar to a team I loved in the 2022 season.
The Commanders won a few games they are used to losing. – CONCERN LEVEL 5
The Commanders are an organization known for giving away games. They can play good and bad teams tighter than expected. What’s different this time around is that they have faced two weaker opponents, and both games were battles until the last possession.
This time around, they didn’t give it away down the stretch. I’m actually impressed by what the offense looks like under Eric Bienemy. It’s not enough to set off the alarms yet, but they are worth keeping an eye on as the Eagles play them in just a few weeks.
The Falcons are unbeaten, but they’re not among the NFC contenders. – CONCERN LEVEL 3.5
On one hand, the Falcons are starting out with an impressive running attack. On the other hand, the Falcons have Desmond Ridder at quarterback. He is no better than a work in progress. What he can become has a ceiling.
My call is that it’s an annoying eight-foot Delco fixer-upper popcorn ceiling with water stains. The Falcons are better, but that is just saying they may create a little noise. I picked them for the last NFC Wild Card, but that’s a long way off.
