Are the Braves Too Good To Be Beaten?- Jayson Stark Weighs In
This Braves team is good. That is not really saying anything groundbreaking. Phillies fans just saw them over a 4-game series put up a ton of runs. And it is what they have been doing to teams all year long. They are about to lock up the NL one seed, with a couple of weeks left in the season. But how good are they? And can they be beaten? Jayson Stark joined The Best Show Ever this week and gave his thoughts.
“What you have seen (this series) it is not just to the Phillies, they do this to everybody. They are not just great, they are historically great. The Braves have the same weighted runs created plus as the 1927 Yankees. They are tied for 1st in the history of baseball… The Braves are going to have 8 players, maybe 9, with 20 home runs. 5 with 30, they may even have 5 with 40. They are going to lead the Major Leagues in home runs by 50 or maybe 60 home runs. Which is unheard of. They will finish with 300 HRs and 100 steals. That is also unheard of.
They just bludgeon everyone. It goes 1-9 in the lineup. One team I talked to compared playing the Braves to playing Buddy Ryan’s 1985 Bears. Where the QB feels like he is running for his life from the first play. That is what it is like to play them. Almost nobody shuts that lineup down. So if the Phillies are going to beat them… they are going to have to out-mash them.”
They lead the leagues in team batting average, team OBP, team SLG %, and their team ops is .044 points higher than the next team. This is the best-hitting team, perhaps in MLB history. There are no weak spots in the lineup. Once you get past Acuna, Albies, and Riley, then you have to deal with Olson, Azuna, Rosario, and Harris.
Does that mean they are unbeatable? No. But like Jayson Stark said, you are going to have to out-hit them. Because as we saw in the most recent series, shutting down their lineup is pretty hard to do. Zack Wheeler was pitching well against them, then two home runs later his team was down 6-1. And the Phillies might just be one of the few times with a chance to keep up with the Braves Bats.
In August the Braves led the league with 194 runs. The Phillies were 2nd with 176 runs. It puts in perspective how good the Braves are that despite how historically great the Phillies bats were in August, they still trailed the Braves in runs. But it does show that this team can mash at the same level. And in that 4-game series, despite losing 3 out of 4, the Phillies hit the Braves pitching, apart from Spencer Strider. Two of the 3 losses went to extra innings. Braves Closer Raisel Iglesias blew two straight saves.
Trea Turner is playing better than any Short Stop ever has in the past month. Kyle Schwarber is one of the best power hitters in the league. Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott are both promising young players having career years. And we know Bryce Harper is as good as anyone in baseball when healthy. The question marks will be Nick Castellanos and JT Realmuto, who have been struggling of late. Still, this Phillies lineup can light up the scoreboard.
And the Braves still have the cloud from last year’s playoff loss over them. They came into that series the far superior team and still lost in 4 games. They are even better this year, but so is the Phillies lineup. And Jayson Stark talked about how the Braves are at least a bit worried about seeing the Phillies again.
“They are weary of the Phillies. They lived through last October, and they know how good the Phillies are and how good the Phillies offense is.”
If the two teams meet, the Phillies are going to be underdogs. That is not disrespect to the Phillies, it is just acknowledging how great the Braves are. But they have lost series this season. They can be beaten. The Phillies are just going to have to play at their very best, and that goes double for the bats.
