Reed Blankenship, Kenny Gainwell, and James Bradberry All Out on Thursday
FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS - SEPTEMBER 10: Kayshon Boutte #80 of the New England Patriots fails to catch a pass in the end zone while being defended by Reed Blankenship #32 of the Philadelphia Eagles during the third quarter at Gillette Stadium on September 10, 2023 in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Earlier this week, the Eagles paced Nakobe Dean on the IR. But the hits keep coming. In the most recent injury report, the Eagles listed 3 more players as out. Reed Blankenship (Ribs), James Bradberry (Concussion), and Kenny Gainwell (Ribs), will all miss the Thursday Night Game vs the Vikings. Fletcher Cox (Ribs), is listed as questionable.
The Gainwell injury is likely easy to replace for one week. D’Andre Swift was already due for far more touches in week 2, and Rashaad Penny was inactive in week 1, and can also pick up Gainwell’s snaps, along with Boston Scott.
The other injuries won’t be as easy to overcome. Josh Jobe showed promise in training camp, but has very little experience playing cornerback in the NFL. He will be tasked with covering rookie WR Jordan Addison, and could even end up on Justin Jefferson a few times. Behind him the Eagles also have Kelee Ringo, Eli Ricks, and Mario Goodrich. Two rookies, and another 2nd year player. As for Reed Blankenship, the Eagles will need to turn to Terrell Edmunds and rookie Sydney Brown. Eagles fans were hoping to see more of Brown, but in place of Justin Evans, not Reed Blankenship. And with the injuries at LB, the Eagles may have been planning to run more 3 Safety looks, which could be hard now if you only have 3 active Safeties.
The Vikings are also dealing with some injuries though. They ruled Center Garrett Bradbury (back) as out. Christian Darrisaw (Ankle) and Marcus Davenport (Ankle) are questionable. The quick turnaround for Thursday games often makes it hard for banged up players to go, but it is hitting the Eagles especially this week. The good news is they will have a long layoff after the game, with them not playing again until Monday Night in week 3. Hopefully that gives more than enough time for all 3 of this guys to be back.
5 Vikings Players Who Could Hurt The Eagles On Thursday Night
Week 1 is behind us. It was ugly, the Eagles won anyway, and now just a few days later, they have to take the field again. The Vikings are coming to town on Thursday night for the Eagles home opener. A team that has become a semi-rival for the Eagles ever since the Eagles beat them 38-7 in the 2017 NFC Championship game. Last year the Eagles continued that tradition by beating them 24-7. But is another blowout in the works?
Unlike the Eagles, the Vikings could not squeak out of week 1 with a win. The Bucs went into Minnesota and beat them 20-17, despite the Vikings entering the game 4.5 point favorites. That is also despite the Vikings having 127 more total yards than the Bucs. The difference maker? Turnovers. Kirk Cousins turned it over 3 times, including two fumbles and an interception. In fairness to him, he was under siege. Cousins got hit 9 times by Bucs defenders. And the Vikings run game, sans Dalvin Cook, was never able to get going.
The Eagles surprisingly enter the game as 7-point favorites. That they are favored is no shock. But being favored by a full TD, even as the home team, is a little surprising. It tells you Vegas are either very high on the Eagles or very low on the Vikings. They overachieved last season. Their defense was not good, and they were exposed in the playoffs. But they are still, they are not a team to overlook, especially on a short week. There is still talent there. Especially at WR, and on the offense in general.
So what players should we be the most concerned about? Could the Vikings give the Eagles more trouble than we are thinking?
