NL Wild Card Contenders Creating Sluggish Race
Between the broadcasts on NBC Sports Philadelphia and the national broadcasts on Sunday night, the phrase “wild card race” could have been the cue for a drinking game. It certainly doesn’t describe the trudge of mediocrity in the NL Wild Card race!
Here are some reasons that it’s less a race and more of a battle of ineptitude.
1. The Phillies are 19-18 over the last six weeks.
If someone tells you that the Philadelphia Phillies are playing good ball, ask them why a month and a half of .500 baseball now passes as “good ball.” It never was, and it isn’t now. They are inconsistent, and they have six weeks left to get it straightened out.
2. The Giants are right on the Phillies’ tails in this race.
The San Francisco Giants come to town for a three-game series tonight with the Phillies, who are up by two games in the NL Wild Card race. How they are in that position is a mystery. They are a weak 16-18 since the All-Star Break. They aren’t hot, and they are not playing solid baseball. Strangely, the Phillies can’t shake them.
3. The Cubs are actually the only team charging.
The Chicago Cubs are playing the best of the NL Wild Card contenders. They are 22-12 since the All-Star Break, and they also dug themselves out of a hole after sitting five games under .500 in mid-July.
4. The Reds shouldn’t be in the race at all.
The Cincinnati Reds became a fun story early in the season with Elly De La Cruz. That story is now about a struggle bus. Their 14-20 mark since the All-Star Break can’t even get them out of this group of underachieving teams.
5. Somehow, the Marlins are still hanging around.
The Fish looked like the inspired young challenger in the first half. Since the All-Star Break, they are 11-22. That still keeps them just a game out of the third wild card. Woof!
6. Beware of snakes!
The Arizona Diamondbacks are a terrible 12-22 since the All-Star Break, yet they are just one game out of a playoff spot.
THE FACTS
As I told you, this isn’t a race of competitive teams. This is a stumble to the finish line. The crazy thing is that THREE of these teams will earn a postseason berth. They have six weeks left to change the direction of their playoff chances.
I know, “All you have to do is get in then anything can happen.” Gotcha!
