Rob Thomson’s Obsession With His Bench Players Needs To End
There has been a lot of talk about Rob Thomson’s poor decision-making in last night’s game today. Not challenging a play where the ball was obviously dropped. Keeping Kyle Schwarber in the game in the 8th instead of pinch-running for him. But no singular decision from last night is worse than the grander issue when it comes to him. It is Rob Thomson’s obsession with overusing his bench players that should bother us the most.

Just look at what the lineup looked like last night. You were coming off a week where you lost both series. You are locked in a very close playoff race. And you are playing one of the best teams in the league. That is when you decide to throw 4 bench players in?
Getting Johan Rojas at-bats is fine. But it should come because Bryce Harper is playing first, opening up a spot in the outfield for him to play. There was no reason to sit Brandon Marsh, especially vs a righty, when he is hitting well recently. But I can at least see why he wanted to get Rojas at-bats. And if JT needed a day off, fine. He plays way more than any catcher as it is. The only issue is that day coming when 3 other starters are sitting.
The really egregious decision is continuing to force Josh Harrison and Jake Cave into the lineup. Harrison has started 25 games this season. His slash line is .210/.264/.300. Harrison is not a good hitter. He is not even an average hitter this year. He is close to an automatic out. The same goes for Jake Cave, who has now played almost every night since he returned, and yet is just 2 for 11 in that time. There is no reason for them to ever replace Stott, or Bohm, or whomever in the lineup unless someone is hurt or just really needs a night off. And it definitely should not come on a night when you already have 2 other bench players out there.
…
It has been an issue nearly all season. Throughout all of June, until Harrison got hurt, we would see Harrison in for Stott vs every lefty. Even though Stott hits lefties way better than Harrison does. It is Johan Carmago or Ronald Torryes with Joe Girardi all over again. Or as one person on Twitter pointed out to me, Sean Rodriguez with Gabe Kapler. Rob Thomson’s obsession with putting Josh Harrison into the lineup is getting incredibly old.
I get he is a vet who has been an effective player in the league before. But that is not who he is this year. And while they may not have better options for him at the moment, that does not mean he has to get so much playing time. Nor does Jake Cave. You could say Cave has not had enough time to do anything since being called back up yet. But he has almost 1000 at-bats in the majors now, and his career slash line is .234/.296/.404/.700. Not awful for a bench player. But if you take it since 2020, it is .208/.269/.346/.615. Not nearly good enough to justify Rob having so much trust in him.
Neither of these two have shown anything to say they are worthy of as much time as Thomson gives them. Yet they continue to appear in the lineup. Cave may even be in left field tonight with Bryce Harper set to play first base. It shows a complete lack of urgency from Rob Thomson, while fans are desperate for a little urgency from this team.
…
Enough is enough. This team does not have the luxury right now to give its guys so much time off. Especially when it seems to always be the young guys who are playing well, like Stott, Bohm, and Marsh, who are sitting. Meanwhile struggling vets like Schwarber and Turner still play every day. And maybe they should play every day. But so should Stott, so should Marsh, and so should Bohm. And as long as they have Johan Rojas up here, he should be playing every day that Bryce Harper plays first base.
Enough of Harrison, enough of Cave. You are killing an already struggling lineup by taking the few guys who are giving you production out of it. even worse, you replace them with guys who currently have no chance vs major league pitching. And if you are going to insist on using the bench this much, at least tell Dave Dombrowski to go out at the deadline who can come off the bench and actually get you a hit. But until that happens, Rob Thomson’s love affair with playing guys like Harrison and Cave has to stop.
