Bryce Harper Is Finally Making His Debut at First Base
It took almost a week longer than planned, but tonight Bryce Harper will finally play first base. He has been working on it since he first came back from off-season Surgery. The plan was eventually for him to take over first so that Kyle Schwarber could move to DH. Rob Thomson first teased us with this last weekend when he said he could play first at some point vs the Padres. That did not happen. Then Thomson said he would play there at some point vs the Brewers. That also did not happen. But tonight, in game 1 vs the Guardians, Just your normal, every day lineup from the Fightins #RingTheBell

Expectations should obviously be reasonable. He has not played the position before, and it is not easy to just switch positions. There will be growing pains. he might make an error or be caught out of place. And that is something we are going to have to be willing to deal with as he learns to play a new position.
But they also don’t have a ton of time to evaluate him. They need to know if he is capable of playing there before the August 1st trade deadline. Because his ability to play first determines what they need to do at the deadline. If he can play first base well enough, then they can trade for an Outfielder, making Schwarber the permanent DH. But if he can’t, and Harper will have to remain a DH, then a First Baseman may be the target. There are only 9 games left to make that decision.
With Bryce Harper at First, and Schwarber the DH, the newly called-up Jake Cave gets the first shot at playing leftfield. That may be the plan going forward vs righties. Johan Rojas will also be an option. They could even play him in Center, and move Brandon Marsh over to left. That lineup would be the best for Outfield Defense, but they may prefer to have the more impactful bat of Jake Cave in there on a nightly basis.
