One of the cooler stories in sports the past couple of years has been Wrexham AFC. They were a team no one had ever heard of in the lowest levels of English Football a few years back. But then Rob McElhenny and Ryan Reynolds decided they wanted to buy a Soccer club. And Wrexham was their choice. In November of 2020, they made the move to buy the scuffling club with a fanbase desperate for a return to relevancy.

Since then they have turned the club into quite the story. A documentary produced by the two owners has followed the story of Wrexham as they sought promotion. This season they finally attained that goal. They are out of the National League, and into the English Football League.

Co-owner Rob McElhenny’s Philly roots gives Wrexham and some ties to the city. In the past, they have worn Eagles-themed jerseys. And those ties are leading to something pretty cool. On July 28th, Wrexham will travel to Philly for a friendly match vs the Philadelphia Union.

The game is set to tip at 7:30 on July 28th. Pre-registration for ticket sales is open now. You can click the link in the above Tweet to find out how to get in line for when tickets actually go on sale.

It will not be the main Union team, but rather the Union’s MLS Next Prop Team, Union II. So don’t expect to see Andre Blake or Daniel Gazdag out there. But it is still a chance to see Wrexham play. The Union have been on their own road to bringing the sport to its town. Philly was never exactly a soccer town. But with the success of the Union is the past several years, Subaru Park is often a packed house. And it is likely to be another packed house when Wrexham comes to town.

DETOUR: Here Are Some Alternate Routes After The I-95 Collapse

Philadelphia is continuing to be impacted by the highway collapse. A lot of commuters are having to plan I-95 detours.

Early Sunday morning (June 11th), a tanker truck caught fire under an I-95 overpass in Philadelphia. The truck crashed into the wall while trying to go around a curve. It was carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline, according to Pennsylvania State Police. On impact, the truck exploded and began an inferno that took hours to put out.

In the process of the fire, the northbound side of 95 collapsed on top of the burning truck due to the high heat. The southbound side also became compromised as a result of the blaze. The tragic crash took an even worse turn, now knowing that an entire stretch of a major interstate would be closed.

People use I-95 daily to get to work, and it is most Philadelphian’s access to the shore. Tons of commuters use the road daily, and without it, there are going to be a ton of traffic headaches. PennDOT has suggested a detour for Philadelphians to use, but we all know there are many different ways to get to the same place. We’ve compiled a list of I-95 detours to take in the days after the collapse.

  • Aramingo Ave

    Aramingo Ave, Philadelphia, PA

Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

This is one of PennDOT’s suggestions for an I-95 northbound detour. It was also suggested by Meg on Facebook. Exit I-95 at Aramingo Avenue. At the end of the ramp, make a left onto Aramingo Avenue. Follow Aramingo Avenue to Tacony Street. Turn right. Take Tacony Street northbound around Tacony-Palmyra Bridge loop to New State Road. Continue northbound. Travel New State Road to Milnor Street and re-enter I-95 northbound.

  • Cottman Ave

    Cottman Ave, Philadelphia, PA

Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

This is one of PennDOT’s suggestions for an I-95 southbound detour. Lauren on Facebook also mentioned this one. Exit I-95 southbound at Cottman Avenue. At the end of the ramp, right on Bleigh Street. Follow Bleigh to State Road, make a left onto State. Travel State Road South to Longshore Avenue. Re-enter I-95 southbound at State Road and Longshore Avenue.

  • Frankford Ave

    Frankford Ave, Philadelphia, PA

Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

Kenneth on Facebook suggested the Frankford Ave detour. It’s a local street near I-95. So if you get off at one of the posted detours and notice the area being really backed up, you can turn down Frankford Ave to connect back with traffic later on. This detour cannot handle the level of traffic 95 experiences daily, though, so exercise caution.

  • Schuylkill Expressway

Schuylkill Expy, King of Prussia, PA

Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

The Schuylkill Expressway, or “76” is a straight road through the city that avoids 95. If you want your best shot at skirting by the traffic chaos, try 76.

  • New Jersey?

    Burlington-Bristol Bridge

Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

You can do so by the Turnpike Connector Bridge or the Burlington-Bristol Bridge. Then once you are in New Jersey, there’s Route 130, I-295, and the New Jersey Turnpike. You can then take one of those down to the Ben Franklin Bridge, Walt Whitman Bridge or Commodore Barry Bridge back into Philadelphia.
