The Phillies Are Finally Off and Running. So What Changed?
The Phillies are off and running now. Not only did they beat down the two teams that they should have, but they took a weekend series from the Dodgers. So where do you stand with this 2023 version of the Phillies?
Let’s just start on a simple level. The biggest improvement from last year has to be the bat of Nick Castellanos. His year of ’22 was forgettable. But wow has he impressed. He has come back to be the guy the Phillies thought they signed. Castellanos is hitting .312, 8 Homers, and 38 RBIs. An incredible turn from last season! His defense has been consistent and in a word…good.
Next, let’s look at the starters. Ranger Suarez is starting to show signs of the past, his location has been improving over his last two starts. The one thing he has been searching for was the changeup. In his start against the Dodgers Ranger put down the last nine hitters in order, including 5 strikeouts.
Taijuan Walker seems to have emerged from his issues with control, the righty has really zoned in with his splitter and has shown improvement with a more simplistic delivery.
Aaron Nola is a story in itself. He can look special one start or even a good portion of a start, it seems like every mistake Nola makes it goes badly, very badly! Nola has given up a home run in 10 straight starts, second only to Randy Wolf, who gave up a homer in 12 straight back in the day.
Finally, Zack Wheeler, to be brief, if he is on location with his pitches he is an ACE!
Looking to the offense, it has been up and down all season. We have seen this team have monster games at times, but we have seen clunkers also. This inconsistency could be coming to an end with the sudden emergence of Trea Turner lately. He has found himself with a slight physical adjustment, but more importantly, his pitch selection has improved over the last 10 games.
Also Kyle Schwarber, it is June you know, moved back to the leadoff spot, and seems he is there to stay. The Phillies have gotten some really good production from a somewhat hidden gem. Kody Clemens has hit, but more importantly, has played some excellent defense for the Phillies.
A good mix on this team, but is the belief real? Very simply, do you believe in this version of the Phillies this season?
