Anthony’s Opening Diatribe- Still Don’t Get Schwarber Leading Off
In Anthony’s Opening Diatribe this morning, he talked about why he still does not understand Schwarber leading off, even if it seems to be working…
“Phillies. Four in a row. Gotta like it. It is all you wanted. I don’t care if it’s the Nationals and Tigers. We said you have to start winning, and now it is 4 in a row. A good performance yesterday. This is what it is. Dodgers coming in. We have 1 more with Detroit, and then the Dodgers. What amazes me, Schwarber is back in the leadoff spot and hits a leadoff HR. It goes against every fiber of my being. That a team with Trea Turner would have Kyle Schwarber leading off. It goes against my Baseball right and wrong system.
But I guess it works. I guess he is just comfortable there. It is June, and he is hitting leadoff. I don’t know how it makes sense, but it’s working. Any answers as to why it works? Other than he is comfortable? He should not be hitting leadoff. Especially with the rule changes and Trea Turner being on this team. Last year, alright. But this year makes no baseball sense.
And yet, they win. Here they are. It is June, and he is starting to hit and is hitting leadoff. So I know you can’t fight city hall. This is what it is. I am still mystified though. I hate it. But if it works it works.”

Grading Every Phillies Hitter Two Months Into the Season
The Phillies are in trouble. We thought these issues were behind us. After last year’s miracle run, we thought that they would be prepared to have a full season. Especially after their busy off-season where they added Trea Turner, Taijuan Walker, and a ton of quality bullpen arms. And yet, here we are again. It is June, and the Phillies are not a playoff team. They aren’t even on the bubble right now. They are 6th in the Wild Card race. It is a problem. They are not pitching well. Nor are they hitting well. We knew the fielding would suck. The base running being a mess is a problem too.
Now once again, they are going to need to dig themselves out of a hole. It took Joe Girardi being fired inspired them to turn it around last year. It’s unlikely they will fire the manager this year. So the players are just going to need to figure it out.
With that said, who is doing their job so far? Which players are most to blame for these issues? Two months into the season seems like a fair time to start judging their performances. We will start with the hitters. From Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Trea Turner, to all of the guys off the bench. Spoiler alert, there are a lot of guys in danger of failing. But there are some guys actually doing their part.
