Jayson Stark On Trea Turner Finally Coming Up Big
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - MAY 10: Trea Turner #7 of the Philadelphia Phillies hits a double during the sixth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Citizens Bank Park on May 10, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Phillies are in a bad way. We are getting close to Memorial Day, and they are still not living up to expectations. The Starting Pitching is a mess. The bats have not woken up yet. The fielding is awful. And they are making stupid mistakes on the base path still. But today, they took a step in the right direction. After trailing the Diamondbacks 5-0, they came back to avoid a sweep. With Trea Turner playing hero by hitting a game tying 2 run shot in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs. And following that big moment and win, Jayson Stark joined The Best Show Ever.
One of the things he weighed in on was Trea Turner’s big moment.
“That was a moment that felt like it was waiting to happen. Trea Turner is not close to as bad as he has looked. He has just gotten into the mode of swinging at everything he sees. He’s number 10 in the MLB at swinging at pitches out of the strike zone. With the worst contact rate when he swing s at those. I don’t know why anyone throws him strikes. But he got one in the bottom of the 9th, and he made them pay.”
Jayson Stark also talked about the upcoming road trip where they will face both the Braves and the Mets.
“Its definitely a huge trip… I don’t think they will win the division anyway. These opportunities to make up ground head to head are more rare now… Lets see where they are. I don’t even know. But I do wonder if today has meaning, both for Trea Turner and the team. Because the body language for the team the last two weeks has been really bad.”

The Stadium Series, and 11 Other Over Rated Sporting Events
The Flyers are back in a stadium series game. Next season, they will play the Devils at Metlife Stadium as part of a series that will also include an Islanders Rangers game. The last time the Flyers played one of these outdoor games was back in 2021 when they got rolled by the Bruins in Nevada in an ugly 7-3 game. Given how good the Devils were this past year, and the fact the Flyers are going into a rebuild, the result may not be much prettier in this game.
The thing is, these Stadium Series games, kind of suck. Hockey does not lend itself well to being played outdoors. The ice always kind of sucks. The games are never that interesting. Weather can often play a factor. If you are at the game the views are never that great. The Stadium Series sounds great on paper, but in practice it is often disappointing. It was cool when it was unique. Like when it was just the Winter Classic. But now they do it too much. Do we really need a team like the Flyers, who won’t be good next year, in one of these games?
Which had me thinking, what are some other sporting events that either lack the luster they used to have, or were never that great to begin with? The things that their league plays up like they are a big deal, but in reality, just are not that much fun to watch.
From All-Star Games, to Award Shows, to one-off events, and more. These events just don’t get it done. Here are 11 sporting events other than The Stadium Series that just are not that good.
