Tim Kurkijan Talks June Schwarber, Turner Slumping, And The Phillies ALS Event
ESPN Baseball insider Tim Kurkijan joined The John Kincade Show Monday morning to discuss all things Phillies, and the upcoming ALS event at Citizens Bank Park.
Now that it’s June we have already seen Kyle Schwarber up his game. It makes virtually no sense as to why a player seems to hit his stride every season in the same month so Tim was asked if there is an explanation for Schwarber’s strong play when June rolls around.
“The explanation for so many baseball questions is ‘there is no explanation, it’s baseball’. I mean, he is the best June hitter essentially of all time, and he’s the weirdest hitter in the world… This is the way it works with Kyle Schwarber, you accept this, because this is the way the game is played today: walks, homers, strikeouts, and Kyle Schwarber is like the poster boy for all 3”
But as Kyle Schwarber turns into the power hitter we all love, Trea Turner continues to struggle at the plate. “This guy is as close to as slump proof as it gets,” Jon Hamm told us, but it seems Hamm was pitching us like he was…. (wait for it)….one of those MAD MEN from the 60s! (pause for laughter). No one is laughing though as Turner’s average goes down and down. So Kurkijan gave his thoughts.
“He is slump proof, and yet this year he has been in a slump the whole year… It’s going to turn, he’s going to hit some hits, and his speed is ridiculous. He’s going to hit close to .300 before he’s done, but boy he better get going here. It’s just another reminder of how difficult the game is to play, and when you pressurize yourself in this game… this is not a sport where you need to put extra pressure on yourself, because it’s so damn hard to play all by itself.”
ALS is something EXTREMELY close to the Kurkijan family with Tim’s brother suffering from the horrible disease. Hopefully, we find a cure for it. For the full interview click below
