The John Kincade Show – Weekdays 6am – 10am

Weekdays 6am - 10am

Howie Roseman looked like he was facing a dire situation with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 when expected franchise quarterback Carson Wentz requested a trade.

Limited draft capital, a tight salary cap situation, a successful head coach who burned out quickly, and an aging roster three years removed from Super Bowl LII convinced the fan base that Roseman had doomed the Eagles.

All he did in response was build arguably the deepest and most talented roster in franchise history to take the Eagles back to the Super Bowl after the 2022 season.

However, with a mass exodus of key contributors, where is the level of trust in Howie Roseman?

The Howie Roseman Sins of the Past

Bob Cooney spoke on The John Kincade Show about his confidence level in Howie Roseman.

“He’s had bad drafts. He’s had really good drafts. It’s the ups and downs of being a GM. He has taken two totally different teams with two different coaches to Super Bowls in just a five-year span.”  -Cooney

Bad drafts in 2019 and 2020 played a major factor in the organization’s downward spiral, but there’s a key difference between Roseman’s situation then and his situation now.

“What Howie I don’t think did have then, what he does have now, is great draft capital. He kind of has a safety net here, John, he doesn’t just have to rely on free agency. He doesn’t just have to rely on the team that he has built now.” -Cooney

The Eagles own two first-round picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, including the 10th-overall selection.

A pick swap with the New Orleans Saints set them up with an extra second-rounder in 2024. High-priced free agents leaving the team this offseason will also stock the Eagles with compensatory picks in the middle and late rounds next year.

Infamous mistakes with some of the few premium picks the Eagles had in 2019 and 2020 set the Eagles back and damaged the level of trust the fan base has in the Philadelphia GM. Picking wide receivers J.J. Arcega-Whiteside (second round in 2019) and Jalen Reagor (first-round in 2020) will stick in the memories of some fans.

Cooney mentioned mistakes that media and fans should be “close to erasing on Howie’s resume” after the resurrection of the franchise under head coach Nick Sirianni and a second Super Bowl appearance in Roseman’s tenure.

However, are you ready to forget the sins of the past with an attitude of confidence in Howie Roseman to execute with his draft capital to restock the roster with replacements for such a high number of key losses?
