The Audio Vault- The Debut of The Jackson 5
See what Andrew Salciunas found in the Audio Vault today. Including Ricky Willimas winning the Heisman, Howard Cosell retiring, The debut of the Jackson 5, and more! Here is the lineup from today’s Audio Vault!
Ricky Willimas Wins Heisman Trophy
Ricky Williams is part of Eagles history, even if he never played here. In that draft, so many Eagles fans wanted him. Instead, they took Donovan McNabb. And while it would go on to be for the best, Eagles fans were not happy at the time. Some fans in attendance at the draft even booed the pick. And McNabb never really got over that. But on this day in history, Ricky Williams won the Heisman. So Andrew pulled some Highlights from Ricky Williams in college for today’s Vault.
Howard Cosell Retires
On this day in 1984, Howard Cosell retired from Monday Night Football. He is still regarded as one of the best football announcers in not just Monday Night history, but NFL history in general. So to honor the all-time great, Andrew pulled a Howard Cosell doing his iconic Halftime Highlight Show, on a night where the Eagles made a cameo.
Pat Summerall Game-Winning Kick
On this day in 1959 Pat Summerall, who would later go on to be an iconic Sports Announcer, kicked a game-winning Field Goal that carried the Giants to a win over the Browns, to set up a playoff. And Andrew pulled the call from it, which shows just how much announcing has come since then, with the call of the winning kick being, as Anthony points out, very robotic. And it does genuinely sound like one of those text-to-speech softwares.
CBS Buys The MLB Broadcast Rights
On this day in 1989, CBS bought the rights to Major League Baseball. They had them until 1993. The last World Series they carried, was sadly for us, the Phillies Blue Jays one. And Andrew played the old CBS Baseball theme, and the last moments of that broadcast (not the final play we wouldn’t do that to you) in the Vault today.
The Jackson 5 Debuts on The Ed Sullivan Show
On this day in 1969, The Jackson 5 debuted on the Ed Sullivan Show. So Andrew pulled the audio of them performing “Want You Back” on the show, and of Ed Sullivan discussing the Jackson 5 afterwards.
