The Preview: Sixers – Wizards
By Connor Thomas
The Sixers had an off night last night following their 2 game sweep of the Charlotte Hornets. Hopefully they come out well rested, because they’ll face a potential trap game tonight in South Philadelphia against the Washington Wizards. The Sixers downed the Wizards in their opening game of the season, 113-107, but that game was in question until a very late 4th quarter pass from Seth Curry leading to a Ben Simmons dunk put the Sixers ahead for good. Though the Wizards started out the young season 0 for their first 5, they have won their last 2 contests over the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Brooklyn Nets. While the Wizards seem to be heating up, the Sixers are already red hot, winning their last 4 games and holding the NBA’s best record at 6-1. With the Brooklyn Nets and Denver Nuggets looming later in the week for Philadelphia, the team will have to make sure to stay focused on the present opponent tonight at the Wells Fargo Center.
Matchups to watch:
The offensive matchup to watch for the Sixers will be Tobias Harris vs. Wizards Rookie Deni Avdija. Harris had a rough game on opening night, but has since played exceptional basketball, earning Eastern Conference Player Of The Week honors last week while averaging a cool 19.3 PPG on the season. Look for Tobi to stay hot against the young rook.
The defensive matchup to watch for the Sixers, as it will be most nights, is Ben Simmons and whoever he ends up guarding. Simmons has proven to be every bit of the Defensive Player of the Year candidate that he has been billed as, but will face a tough task with the talented guards Washington touts. Simmons handled Russell Westbrook well in the previous matchup between these 2 teams, holding the explosive guard to 21 points on 9 for 22 shooting. The question is whether or not Doc Rivers will switch his elite defender onto Bradley Beal, who scored 31 against Philly last time out. Either way, that matchup will play a huge part in determining the outcome of tonight’s game.
