Phillies trade Austin Davis to Pirates for player to be named later and cash
The Phillies made a BLOCKBUSTER trade Wednesday afternoon, sending left-handed reliever Austin Davis to the Pirates for a player to be named later and cash considerations.
The Phillies had designated Davis for assignment after acquiring right-hander David Hale from the Yankees last Friday. They had given Davis plenty of opportunities but he struggled to consistently get outs in the majors.
In 50 appearances with the Phillies from 2018-20, Davis had a 5.86 ERA and 1.61 WHIP. He was ineffective against lefties, allowing them a .330/.408/.582 slash line in 104 plate appearances.
Davis was the Phillies’ 12th-round pick in 2014 out of Cal State Bakersfield. He had a bit of success as a rookie with a 2.60 ERA in his first 14 appearances as a major-leaguer but it has been downhill from there.
He’ll have a better opportunity in Pittsburgh, where he appears poised to join the Pirates’ 28-man roster.
The Phillies are down to two left-handers on their 15-man pitching staff: Adam Morgan and JoJo Romero. Jose Alvarez could miss up to a month as he recovers from a testicular contusion.
The 2020 MLB trade deadline is Monday at 4 p.m.
