Sources: Phillies on verge of acquiring Red Sox closer Brandon Workman and others
After watching their bullpen implode twice in Thursday’s doubleheader loss to Toronto, the Phillies are moving quickly to improve baseball’s worst bullpen.
The team acquired right-handed reliever David Hale from the Yankees for minor-league reliever Addison Russ on Friday.
The Phils are also poised to swing another deal, according to sources, that would net them closer Brandon Workman from the Boston Red Sox.
The Phils and Sox are in active talks on that deal. The trade, according to sources, would involve multiple players.
Workman, 32, had 16 saves for the Red Sox last season and struck out 13.1 batters per nine innings while going 10-1 with a 1.88 ERA in 73 games. He has a 4.05 ERA in seven games this season. He faced the Phillies earlier this week and pitched a scoreless inning.
Workman was drafted by the Phillies in the third round in 2007 but did not sign. He went on to pitch for the University of Texas. He will be a free agent at the end of the season.
