Tackling AJ Brown’s Seven Food Takes on Tuesday
In the midst of all the free agency hoopla on Tuesday, AJ Brown had a field day on Twitter with his takes on the world of fruits and vegetables.
No, seriously.

As a man who just went grocery shopping for the first time in nearly a month and a half, I am uniquely qualified to weigh in on these takes and give validity to WR1’s feeling on nature’s glorious gifts to our diet.
Grapefruit >>>oranges
— AJ BROWN (@1kalwaysopen_) March 14, 2023
Staying true to takesmith form, Brown fired away on his hottest take right from the start.
Oranges are a jack-of-all-trades fruit. Makes for tremendous juice, pairs well with certain alcoholic beverages and is a solid individual performer.
Frankly, you can put the orange into any situation and it’s a home run choice.
He quickly learned that by simply contrasting this top tier talent, he created an awful situation for his take on grapefruit.
People don’t really like grapefruits?
— AJ BROWN (@1kalwaysopen_) March 14, 2023
The truth is, I think people tolerate the grapefruit. The name is misleading, it is nothing like the grape.
On its own, it’s bitter and isn’t something that I would eat by itself. Think of this like the Kirk Cousins of fruits. It’s had some success and some will overrate it, but will never be trusted in the big situations and needs a lot of help around it.

This brings me to Brown’s most egregious take.
Watermelon is an ELITE summer food.
The refreshment of a cold piece of watermelon while out in the hot sun is unmatched. Brown’s take mentions the lack of taste, but fails to acknowledge the advantage that creates for the watermelon in its best use.
Certainly a system fruit, but tremendous in its system.
Pineapples are okay . Strawberries are mid lol
— AJ BROWN (@1kalwaysopen_) March 14, 2023
Brown is underplaying both here, but it’s a fair assessment.
The pineapple is better in theory than in practice. Too much variance in its performance.
Prime pineapple goes toe-to-toe with any of the fruits out there, but that doesn’t happen nearly enough. There is nothing worse than biting into the dried out pineapple and the overly soaked pineapple is also a disaster.
Pineapple drinks are great, the juice alone doesn’t quite hold up. Good as a mix, good when perfectly ripe as a fruit, but just not everyday consistency.
Strawberries are a solid role playing fruit. Perfect in a bowl, solid as an artificial flavor.
It’s a good fruit, better than mid, but I’m not going to war over the strawberry.

Slightly higher on grapes than I am, but the black berries conversation is what I’m here for.
As I have grown up, I have found a greater appreciation for the raspberry and black berry. The two of them are elite tier fruits. Becoming older is realizing they should be the first fruits you snag out of a fruit bowl.
In addition to that, they are underrated artificial flavor fruits which makes them solid plays in today’s modern game.
They do enough as a standalone fruit to keep them at the top.
Mangoes straight
— AJ BROWN (@1kalwaysopen_) March 14, 2023
Mangoes are nature’s greatest gift to humanity. Debate a wall.

This feels like a pandering move to me.
Red apples are the superior apple. They have better branding, being the default apple that appears when you search about the fruit on the web.
Answering green in this scenario is only to let us know that he bleeds green in every facet of life.
Personally, I’m a Phillies red type of apple.

Correct. No notes. Just a great take.

Another electric job of delivering a take.
Much like the orange before it, carrots and cucumbers are headliners that take a backseat in this tweet.
Brown could have just praised some of the non-heavy hitters in the vegetable community.
A simple “people really sleep on cauliflower” would not have nearly done the damage that this take did.
The correct “cucumber is a system vegetable” take would have done just fine.
But no, as a true showman, Brown took aim at a number of the big time veggies.
And yes, he has a point. He unfairly takes a shot at zucchini, an objectively good vegetable, but does heap the proper praise upon spinach, corn and green beans.
Brussel sprouts are hitting their cultural prime right now, they have become a staple in delicious meals and are ready to make a run in the coming years to the top of the vegetable game.
Carrots catch a stray here that seems undeserved. Solid snacking fruit, lots of great uses and one of the sole vegetables to have their own juice.
Now go grocery shopping and stop eating fast food 😂😂😂

Overall, a lot of good, thought-provoking conversation created here by AJ Brown. I would love to hit the grocery store with him to get a bigger grasp of his takes on food.
Plus, I need his take on the self checkout set up.
Need to know how AJ Brown feels about those self checkout machines yelling at you https://t.co/fYZsXOy6xT

I love self check out at the grocery store because the computer yells at you every five seconds that you’re saving money and then it charges you all of your life savings
