The Silver Lining IF The Eagles End Up As The NFC 2-seed
The Detroit Lions appearing to be the inevitable top seed in the NFC is disappointing but hardly a death sentence to the Eagles Super Bowl hopes. It’s far easier to get the bye week and to have to navigate just two home games in order to get to New Orleans. However, the 2-seed creates a great opportunity to have two home playoff games in order to gain access to the NFC Championship Game.
Thankfully the other divisional leaders in the NFC are not going to beat them to the second seed. An NFC East title will insure that the Birds get the second easiest path. So why would the 2-seed not be as bad as you might think? Let me try and convince you.
The Eagles still need 7 things to happen to get the 1-seed
Here is what is required for the Birds to gain home-field advantage. The Eagles must win their last four games. That would run their winning streak to 13 games. The Lions would have to lose two of their remaining four games. They face the Bills this weekend so it could possibly happen to open the door to dreaming. If it doesn’t, things look quite bleak. They also would have to see the Vikings lose another game. If you need seven things to happen, the odds are against you seeing every domino fall your way.
If you can’t get all 7 things to happen it’s not a bad thing
There is a great chance that by the end of their 16th game vs Dallas the Eagles will know exactly where they will end up. That is most likely the 2-seed. If so, the final game against the Giants becomes the bye week you didn’t earn by grabbing the top seed. Rest is great and two weeks without game action for the stars of this club would be welcome.
The 2-seed gets multiple chances to host home games
The two seed hosts the worst wild card team at home and if they win that game they get to host a Divisional Playoff game the following weekend. That game would most likely be against either the NFC West or South Champion if either of them wins their home wildcard contest. You would have to like the Eagles’ chances to win in both of those potential matchups.
The Packers or Vikings would most likely head to Detroit in the Divisional Round
If the Eagles path to the NFC Title Game does not include having to face Minnesota or Green Bay that would be an absolute gift. If a potential upset happened with the Lions you could end up hosting the NFC Title Game too.
The Eagles current Magic Numbers
If the Eagles win two of their final four games they will secure the two seed. There is no reason to believe they won’t do that with their remaining schedule.
One win would guarantee that if they win the NFC East they will be no worse than the three seed. There is a possibility that the final two games could mean nothing (if the Eagles lost either to Pittsburgh or Washington) and they would have two games to rest up their starters.
Having to navigate that would be a true challenge of keeping their edge. Buckle up and enjoy the final four games.
