CT’s Top 3: Philadelphia Eagles Surprises This Season
Well, it feels like the Philadelphia Eagles are starting to hit their stride. After 3 straight victories culminated in a dominant win over the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday, Eagles fans seem to be breathing easier for the first time in a while. But has the season really gone as expected so far?
Clearly, there are things we missed with our preseason predictions on Kincade And Salciunas, but what have been the biggest surprises through the birds’ first 7 games?
1. The defense has played well above expectations
It’s nearly unbelievable to see what a young, unproven Eagles defense has accomplished so far this season. They are currently 7th in the NFL in points per game allowed, and that number largely exists where it does because of young budding star players like Quinyon Mitchell, Jalen Carter, and even Nakobe Dean. If this keeps up? Well, Vic Fangio will get plenty of credit as well.
2. The offensive line depth has been impressive
It wasn’t a huge conversation ahead of the season, but the depth chart looked light on the offensive line front if any of the starters were to go down. And now? Well, Fred Johnson has been a revelation filling in for Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata, and Tyler Steen has been serviceable in relief of Mekhi Becton. The offensive line hasn’t lost a step due to injury, and that’s impressive. Chalk that one up to Jeff Stoutland University.
3. The Eagles are still starting slow on offense
Ok, this has to be the most surprising stat of the season so far. I can’t even think of a close second. The Eagles STILL haven’t scored a point in the 1st quarter of any of their games this year. It’s unbelievable. On top of that, they’re 5-2?? In what world is that even possible? Now they did score on their first DRIVE against Cincinnati, but a faster start would be welcome for sure.
