97.5 The Fanatic Flyers Roundup: More Than Matvei Michkov Instagram Posts
The most exciting stretch of the NHL calendar has arrived. However, fans of the Philadelphia Flyers are stuck praying for luck in the NHL Draft Lottery and gushing over Matvei Michkov deadlifting in an Instagram video.
NHL Draft Lottery
The Flyers didn’t strike gold in the NHL Draft Lottery. They landed in their natural draft position with the 12th-overall pick.
The San Jose Sharks finished with the NHL’s worst record in 2023-24. They entered with the highest odds, and they landed the top pick. Macklin Celebrini of Boston University will most likely come off the board with the first-overall selection.
Danny Briere also has a late first-round pick that the Flyers acquired from the Florida Panthers in the Claude Giroux trade. Philadelphia fans should root against Florida in the playoffs with Carson Wentz style spite for an outcome that benefits the hometown team.
The 2024 NHL Entry Draft will take place at the Sphere in Las Vegas from June 28-29.
Lehigh Valley Phantoms
The Flyers have emphasized the need for their young players to develop internally by gaining experience in high-pressure situations. They believe that the intensity of AHL playoff games builds beneficial experience for young players.
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms swept the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to advance to the Atlantic Division Semifinals of the Calder Cup Playoffs.
The Hershey Bears took a 2-0 lead in the five-game series, but the Phantoms got on the board with a Game 3 victory behind a goal and an assist from Olle Lycksell.
Lycksell, Ronnie Attard, Bobby Brink, and Adam Ginning all played significant minutes at the NHL level this season. Other Flyers prospects like Emil Andrae and Elliot Desnoyers also hope that AHL minutes can help their case for NHL roster spots in 2024-25.
The Phantoms will face Hershey in Game 4 on Saturday and Game 5 (if necessary) on Sunday.
Broad Street Bullies
The Flyers celebrated the golden anniversary of their first Stanley Cup during Alumni Weekend in January. The Broad Street Bullies came together again at Citizens Bank Park on Monday.
Bill Barber, Bob “The Hound” Kelly, Orest Kindrachuk, Dave “The Hammer” Schultz, Jimmy Watson, and Larry Goodenough relished the cheers as Dan Baker announced the beloved Bullies. The Original Flyer Joe Watson threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The Flyers became the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup on May 19, 1974 with a victory against the Boston Bruins.
While fans will cherish the memories of iconic Flyers teams of the 1970s, they’re also hungry for more Stanley Cup glory.
They dream of a day when they don’t have to cling to grainy YouTube videos for anniversary celebrations. Through the hardships, Flyers fans deserve another championship.
