97.5 The Fanatic Flyers Roundup: Former Flyers in the Playoffs
The Stanley Cup Playoffs will captivate the hockey world until mid June, and Philadelphia will be forced to watch former Flyers at the most exciting time of the year while their team hits the golf course.

Ivan Fedotov Contract
The Flyers signed Ivan Fedotov to a two-year contract worth $3.25 million in average annual value. The well-publicized Russian goaltender appeared in three games at the end of the 2023-24 season after an outrageous journey to the NHL.
Fedotov will likely begin 2024-25 as the backup behind Sam Ersson, who will earn $1.45 million in AAV the next two seasons.
Ersson struggled late in the 2023-24 season after the Flyers leaned on him heavily as their top goaltender in the absence of Carter Hart. The young Swede has plenty of questions to answer about his worth as a number one goalie.
Fedotov has raw potential to break out in the NHL. He has four seasons under his belt as a full-time goaltender in the KHL, considered the second-best hockey league in the world. He also led Russian athletes to a silver medal at the Winter Olympics in 2022.
However, he faces an enormous list of obstacles in his acclimation to the North American game. KHL goaltenders face less traffic on screens and less puck movement in high-danger areas than the fast-paced NHL barrage. The NHL also implemented rules in the salary cap era that restrict goaltending pads and eliminate the advantage of thick equipment KHL goalies typically wear.
“I’m not (a) young guy. I have some experience, and (I) know how it’s working. I don’t care if I’m playing from the first minute or (entering) during the game. I need to play, so it doesn’t matter. I just want to help the team.” -Ivan Fedotov pic.twitter.com/NaP81EtMEE

The Flyers won’t make offseason changes to contend in 2024-25. They will pass on adding a veteran to work in tandem with Ersson, which seemed like the likeliest scenario before Fedotov joined the team in the final weeks of the season.
The roster construction strategy to focus on the future and allow younger players to develop includes counting on unproven goaltenders.
“We’re not at the point where we’re going to trade young assets for older veterans that are going to get us over the board. I still don’t think we’re a Stanley Cup contender, but you know it’s one of those questions where it’s not black and white like maybe it was last summer.” -Danny Briere
Former Flyers in the Stanley Cup Playoffs
The Flyers missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season in 2023-24. The streak includes only the second stretch in franchise history with back-to-back seasons out of the playoffs.
Hockey fans in Philadelphia unfortunately watch the best teams in the NHL each spring without the Orange and Black in the mix. They inevitably notice former Flyers on the ice.
Eastern Conference Teams
- Florida Panthers: Sergei Bobrovsky, Nick Cousins, Anthony Stolarz
- Boston Bruins: James van Riemsdyk
- New York Rangers: Erik Gustafsson
- Washington Capitals: Nicolas Aube-Kubel
- Carolina Hurricanes: Tony DeAngelo, Brendan Lemieux
Flyers fans know the story of Bobrovsky all too well at this point, but he still sends them a reminder of the Ilya Bryzgalov nightmare each year.
Not many Philadelphians will root for a team from Boston, but James van Riemsdyk is one former Flyer to remember positively. He spent eight relatively successful seasons in two stints with the Flyers and developed an excellent reputation in the local community, despite some lingering bitterness within the fan base about the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
Western Conference Teams
- Colorado Avalanche: Sean Walker
- Edmonton Oilers: Sam Gagner, Calvin Pickard
- Los Angeles Kings: Cam Talbot
- Vancouver Canucks: Mark Friedman
- Nashville Predators: Luke Schenn
Sean Walker is the most intriguing former Flyer in the Western Conference playoffs. Danny Briere sent the 29-year-old impending free agent to the Avalanche ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline in a deal that brought back a conditional first-round pick in 2025.
The uncommon strategy to sell a contributing veteran during a playoff race ultimately left the Flyers blue line in bad condition, especially considering the overworked and injured group of defensemen they used for the remainder of the season.
John Tortorella said on 97.5 The Fanatic in March that the Flyers would have interest in bringing Walker back in free agency this summer.
“We did the right thing because we need to keep on bringing assets in here. That’s the stage we’re at. Would we be interested in Walks (Walker) after this year? You’re god damn right we would be, but who knows where it goes to?” –John Tortorella
