Flyers Playoff Scenarios: Everything You Need To Know
Travis Konecny buried a shorthanded goal to defeat the New Jersey Devils 1-0 in the 81st game of the season. Philadelphia Flyers playoff scenarios didn’t seem like a logical thought after an embarrassing eight-game losing streak, but the Orange and Black remain alive.

Fans should hang on for dear life and root against the Detroit Red Wings, Washington Capitals, and Pittsburgh Penguins.
All three teams have the advantage of one extra game in hand. They will all play on Monday night before the Flyers take the ice for the 82nd and final game on Tuesday against the Capitals at 7pm on 97.5 The Fanatic.
Remember a few things.
- Regulation wins are more valuable. Cheer for the Flyers to get two points in regulation, improve their tie-breaker scenarios, and keep the Capitals from getting any points. Cheer for the other teams to lose in regulation, miss the chance for the loser point, and hurt their tie-breaker scenarios.
- Tie-breaker scenarios change if more than one team finishes tied for the final spot.
- The Penguins play their final game on Wednesday. If the Flyers win on Tuesday, they probably won’t know for another day if they’ve earned a playoff spot.
Flyers Playoff Scenarios
The Flyers cannot catch the New York Islanders for the third position in the Metropolitan Division or the Tampa Bay Lightning for the top wild card in the Eastern Conference. The only position they could grab is the final wild card spot.
Plenty of permutations still exist in the final days of the regular season. The NHL rules that award one loser point for a game that goes past regulation make things incredibly complicated. However, the easiest way to observe is to remember that the Flyers can only make the playoffs with a win in their final game against the Capitals.
A win would put the Flyers at 89 points. The Red Wings, Capitals, and Penguins would have to finish with 89 or fewer points, and the Flyers would have to emerge from a tie-breaker if one or more of their competition hits 89 exactly.

The Penguins gave the Flyers a gift with a regulation loss against the Boston Bruins on Saturday night. Sidney Crosby is human, after all. Pittsburgh has two games remaining. Four points in two victories would eliminate the Flyers. The Flyers are unlikely to win a tie-breaker scenario if they finish locked with only their cross-state rivals.

Monday 4/15: vs. Predators
Wednesday 4/17: @ Islanders
Tiebreakers- 1 ahead of Flyers in regulation wins (1st) and regulation/OT wins (2nd), 1 behind Flyers in total wins, clinched season series vs. Flyers
The Red Wings own the highest playoff odds with 87 points and two games remaining. They must earn two or fewer of the possible four points on the table to keep the Flyers alive. One win and an overtime or shootout loss would eliminate the Flyers. Detroit is guaranteed to lose the first tiebreaker if they finish tied with the Flyers.

Monday 4/15: vs. Canadiens
Tuesday 4/16: @ Canadiens
Tiebreakers- fewer regulation wins (1st), more regulation/OT wins (2nd)
The opportunity to beat Washington in a head-to-head matchup is possibly the most significant advantage in any of the Flyers playoff scenarios. Even if the Capitals travel to Philadelphia on Tuesday with a two-point lead, the Flyers can tie them at 89 points and clinch the tie-breaker scenarios between the two teams with a regulation win.
Washington Capitals- 87 points, 2 games remaining Monday 4/15: vs. Bruins Tuesday 4/16: @ Flyers Tiebreakers- dead lock with Flyers in regulation wins (1st), regulation/OT wins (2nd), total wins (3rd), Flyers win season series with 𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒊𝒏 𝑶𝑵𝑳𝒀 on Tuesday

A small possibility exists that the Capitals would play conservatively to force overtime against the Flyers. Could you imagine John Tortorella pulling the goalie in a tie game looking for a regulation victory to keep the Capitals at 89?
A berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs would mean a first-round matchup against the New York Rangers or Boston Bruins.
