Sean Couturier Nominated For Masterton Trophy
Sean Couturier received the Philadelphia Flyers 2024 nomination for the Bill Masterton Trophy. The local chapters of the Professional Hockey Writers Association nominate one player from each respective NHL team who best exemplifies qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey in a single season.
Sean Couturier
Philadelphia’s 31-year-old captain had established a reputation in the top tier of two-way NHL centers by the start of the 2021-22 season. He played only 29 games in the campaign due to a back injury.
Couturier hoped to recover from back surgery to begin the 2022-23 season. Setbacks and discomfort kept him out for the entire season. He went from Dec. 18, 2021 until Oct. 12, 2023 without playing in a meaningful NHL game.
He hit the ground running with a strong start for the resurgent Flyers in 2033-24. Although he’s slowed down during the second half of the season, Couturier has 11 goals and 25 assists in 70 games. Head coach John Tortorella repeatedly complimented how much his veteran center showed a competitive spirit in anticipation of his return during the recovery period.
The highlight of his season came in February when he became the 19th captain in Flyers history. Tortorella surprisingly sat his newly-appointed captain as a healthy scratch just over a month later.
Couturier’s current contract runs through the 2029-30 season. He won the Selke Trophy in 2020 as the NHL’s best defensive forward. He’s played 12 NHL seasons, all with the Flyers.
Masterton Trophy
Oskar Lindblom won the Masterton Trophy in 2021 after an off-ice battle with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.
Kevin Hayes received Philadelphia’s nomination in 2022, and Nick Seeler earned the nod in 2023.
Kris Letang of the Pittsburgh Penguins won the award last season after a remarkable return to the ice 12 days after suffering a stroke.
The league will award the Masterton Trophy to Sean Couturier or one of the other 31 nominees as part of a ceremony in the week leading up to the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on June 28-29 in Las Vegas.
